Day 3 Lesson Plan from Three-Day Unit Plan

Title Kirchhoffs Voltage Law

Subject Area Physics
Grade Level 12
Lesson Summary Students will cumulate their three-
day unit by taking the Ohms Law
calculation one step further and
determining the voltage difference
at any resistor in a circuit.
Standards 3.2.P.B4
Essential Questions How do you determine the amount
of voltage a resistor converts into
heat and light?
Objectives Students will be able to use Ohms Law
and Kirchhoffs Voltage Law to calculate the
voltage lost at each resistor in a circuit with at
least 70% accuracy.

Estimated Time 50 Minutes
Materials Required Potato light for demonstration.
Worksheets.
Procedure Demonstrate potato light. This is irrelevant
for the day, but it catches interest, and it will
be references later when talking about where
batteries get their energy.

Briefly explain how the potato light works.

Explain objective: were taking our math one
step further to determine one more important
thing about circuit, the voltage lost to heat
and light at any resistor.

Recall prior knowledge by reviewing Current

Calculation Worksheet. This was homework
from the previous day.

Model Kirchhoffs Voltage Law. Do several

problems on the board.

Drill the class to confirm understanding.

Have several students come up and try similar
problems.

Model calculating equivalent resistance, then

current, then using Ohms Law to determine
the voltage lost at each resistor in a circuit.
This cumulates all of the skills learned in this
unit. Go slowly and ask questions to confirm
understanding.

Administer Voltage Difference Calculation

Worksheet I. Assist class until completion.
Be generous when closing gap of zone of
proximal development.

Review Voltage Difference Calculation

Worksheet I. Be patient and thorough.
Almost every student should be able to
successfully complete SOME problems.

Administer Voltage Difference Calculation

Worksheet II for the class to work on for
homework until the bell.
