Assisting as a high school Agriculture Ed cadet in the Classroom
2015-2016
Description
The artifact I chose a picture of my Animals, Plants and Nature class I cadeted from my
high school. I became a cadet, which is like a teachers assistant, for my Ag teacher. I didnt run
lessons but Mrs. Beaty allowed me and the other cadets to help with lessons, quiz students, grade
tests/quizzes, and prepare documents. This allowed me to get some experience as what duties a
Agriculture teacher must carry out.
Alignment
Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment:
This artifact best aligns with Standard 1: Content, which states the teacher understands
the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the disciplines she or he teaches and can
create learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for pupils.
While becoming a cadet I had to have the course I was observing already completed, because
sometimes the teacher would need us to help with quizzing, which fits Standard 1. For example,
one day myself and another cadet had to quiz the class on different species of animals using
flashcards, we had to know the different species and different facts about them because of test
the class was later going to be taking. Another example was when we did the
greenhouse/planting unit, myself and the other cadets were in charge of passing out different
seeds and making sure students did it properly so we could get the best results.
Through this I learned how to teach in a way the students would listen and take me
seriously. I was also able to understand more about agriculture going through the class a second
time and going through the curriculum.
UW-Platteville Knowledge, Skill, Disposition Alignment:
This artifact aligns with KS1.d.: Demonstrates Knowledge of Resources The candidate
actively seeks materials and resources to enhance instruction by utilizing school and district
resources as well as other resources available outside the school/district.
As a cadet I used different techniques to help aid students that were reviewing as well as
struggling in the unit we were in. I was able to lead with authority because of the experience I
had with the class and the objects used. Adjusting to the different needs of each student became a
new experience I hadnt before dealt with.
Because of this experience, I became more confident with using various objects around
the classroom. I was given the opportunity to learn how to work with others who thought
different from myself.
Secondary KSDs:
KSD1.a. : Demonstrates Knowledge of Content and Pedagogy
KSD2.d. : Manages Student Behavior
KSD3.d. : Provides Feedback to Students
What I learned about teaching / learning from this experience:
Becoming a cadet, I was allowed experience in working with high schoolers instead of
young children. This allowed me to expand my knowledge on how students function, whether it
be hands on or through a various number of tests. Also with my work with older kids I was able
to get feedback on what was working and what was not working, so I could inform my Ag
teacher what the students were thinking. Through this experience I became more understanding
with students that were close to my age because I was able to relate to some of their certain study
habits.
What I learned about myself as a prospective educator as a result of this experience:
Even though for awhile I thought I enjoyed working with older kids, this experience
turned me away from working with high schoolers just entirely based on their attitudes toward
school in general. However, it continued to spark my love for agriculture and showed me how
much our future generations need to advocate for the industry as a whole
