After being witness to the first 100 days of his budding presidency, citizens

across the nation have gotten a somber and even frightening glimpse into what is

now considered The Trump Era. Otherwise known as the remaining years of his

presidency. Despite his short tenure as the acting president, his time in office has

been riddled with lies, bombs, failed policy changes, and a mountain scandals.

Leaving democrats and republicans alike kicking themselves over how they let this

walking atrocity into the oval office. Well ladies and gentlemen, let me lead you

through one of the many twisted roads that got Donald Trump to 1600 Pennsylvania

Ave NW, Washington D.C. That would be known as the electoral college.

For those who do not know, the electoral college is the system in which this

country uses to elected its presidents (www.ncsl.org). The electoral college consist

of hand full of people, 538 of them to be exact, otherwise known as the electors.

These people are instructed to cast their vote the way of the majority vote of the

district they represent, for president. Now at first glance, this policy looks fine.

However, due to the potential presence of what is called faithless electors,

(Gregg) or members of the electoral college who choses to vote differently from who

the majority voted for, can make the final decision on who they themselves want to

be president. From this fact alone, I think that the electoral college should be

abolished and that the popular vote should be what is used to elect the next

president.

Now, for those who were familiar with the inner working of this system, I know what

youre thinking. Yes, the instances of faithless electors vote changing the outcome

of the election has not been in abundance. However, it has been founded that out of

the fourty-four presidents this country has had, that four of them had lost the
popular vote but won the presidency by the electoral vote (www.History.com).

Now, how could this be? As exemplified in our most recent election, if the majority

of the country choses one candidate to be their president, how did they end up the

another? Furthermore, how do we keep letting this happen

Well folks, maybe I can shed some light on this issue for you. The bottom line

here, is that We the People are operating under a false sense of democracy.

Meaning, that foundation that the country was supposedly built on. Or that promise

that gives the right to choose who should to lead this nation was to be allocated to

the American people, can be nulled at the whim of a select few. This should not be

the case. It is the American voters right to be able to choose who they want to be

president. Their vote should be the determining factor it was meant to be, rather

than the suggestion it acts as now. By eliminating the outdated electoral college

system, and putting popular vote in its place, the American voters voice will finally

be heard.
