Travelling the world

Some animals travel long distances every year to
find food or a warmer place to live.
The Monarch butterfly travels the furthest of
all insects. It makes a return journey of 8,000
km every year from its homeland in Canada to
Mexico.
Grey whales live in Alaska and Canada in
summer. In winter, they swim to Mexico, where it
is warmer. Then, when its winter in Mexico, they
swim back north. This means they travel a total of
20,000 km a year!
The Arctic tern has the longest journey of any
animal a round trip of 35,000 km! This bird lives
in the Arctic during the northern summer and flies
to the Antarctic for the southern
summer. A few months later, it
returns to the Arctic. It doesnt
land very often so it eats insects
while it is flying.
But travelling the world can
be dangerous. Around 90,000
birds die each year in New York
when they crash into buildings
at night. The birds find the
bright lights from skyscrapers
confusing. Now people turn
off lights in skyscrapers in
New York to make it easier for
migrating birds.

For homework, students use the Internet
to research the migratory route of another
animal, insect or bird. Students should present
their findings to the class, including showing
the route the animal takes on a map.
Plot all the routes on a large world map if
possible.
