Concept:

Movement is found in nature in every living organism. Even static elements change with time
and offer a sense of movement when exposed to elements such as wind, rain, or temperature.
Movement is promoted with continuity, sequence and flow.
Continuity Elements reappear in a consecutive manner.
Sequence A following of an event after another in a logical order and at a different time.
Flow A continuous and smooth movement that may carry a directional change caused by
external forces.
While the concept of circulation in architecture, isn't so different - it refers to the way
people, the blood of our buildings, move through space.
In particular, circulation routes are the pathways people take through and around buildings
or urban places. Circulation is often thought of as the 'space between the spaces', having
a connective function, but it can be much more than that. It is the concept that captures
the experience of moving our bodies around a building, three-dimensionally and through
time.

This the concept that would prevail in the design and planning of the strip mall to further
enhance the experience of moving through the whole building.

Green architecture
Background
Climate change and resource depletion are the main challenges that mankind has
to face in the 21 st century. The world is warming and that the average global temperature
has increased by around 0.7 degrees since the advent of the industrial era. With the global
rise ij temperature, local rainfall patterns are changing, ecological zones are shifting, the
seas are warming and the ice caps are melting. And nobody will be immune to its
consequences.
The building sector
Building design and construction has become one of the contributor in
greenhouse gases emission taking into consideration that most of the energy presently
consumed in buildings is biomass and that the expected improvement in living conditions
will lead to a shift to fossil fuel, dramatically increasing co2 emissions.

Considerations:
Circulation
- social interaction and a better life style are achieved through well designed
and properly managed public spaces. Building design parameters which
affect the crowd circulation and management are route, entrance type,
dimension of stair risers and treads, handrail height and spacing, number of
stairs, and the width of corridors and doors.

Climate responsive design

o Passive design

-refers to architectural features such that taking advantage of local

climatic resources to provide an indoor environment which is as
comfortable as possible. Thus, reducing energy consumption for
mechanical heating or cooling.
o Site planning
-sustainable site planning begins with an assessment of the building
site in terms of its capability to provide natural resources, such as
light, air, and water, and the extent to which the existing natural
systems will be required to support the new development.

Sun orientation
-building orientation in tropical climates is vey critical,
and the basic rule is to minimize facades facing east and west and
take into account local prevailing winds, because of their connection
with natural ventilation.

Wind orientation
-where passive cooling is of priority the building should
be oriented to take advantage of prevailing breezes.

o Daylighting
-taking advantage of daylight is essential for sustainable architecture
in any climatic conditions, in order to provide visual comfort, reduce
the amount of conventional energy used and at the same time
diminish thermal gains indoors caused by artificial lighting.

Objectives:
To design a strip mall with a well-planned circulation system/
To design a strip mall that is climate responsive design.
To design a strip mall with a well-planned site, with respect with the building orientation.
To design a strip mall that will minimize the use of mechanical ventilation.
