LESSON PLAN FORMAT

The following is a sample of the lesson plan format used by the University.

Lesson Topic/Focus: Graphs Date: 24/6/15

AusVELS Domain(s): Mathematics Year level(s): 5

AusVELS strand (s): Statistics and Probability Lesson duration: 100 minutes
(double lesson)

AusVELS sub-strand(s): Data Representation and Interpretation

AusVELS Dimension(s) or ACMSP119 - Construct displays, including column graphs, dot plots and
Religious Education tables, appropriate for data type, with and without the use of digital
Guideline: technologies

Learning Standard(s)/Outcome(s):
We are learning to create a graph using data we have accumulated through the use of Microsoft Excel.
Including choosing an appropriate graph and labelling the axis correctly.

At the conclusion of this lesson, the students will know/understand that:

A tally can be turned into a graph to represent the data in a logical way, as well as how to correctly label
the graphs they have produced.

At the conclusion of this lesson, the students will demonstrate the skills/strategies of:
How to convert a tally into a graph into Microsoft Excel, how to use the functions of Excel to label the
graph and how to copy their graph into Word.

Assessment:
The students graphs will be assessed on their appropriateness to the data and how well this data is
represented.

Assessment criteria for analysis:

I am doing well if I can convert my tally data into an appropriately chosen graph on Excel, correctly label
the axis and title and then transfer this graph onto a Word document.

Teaching focus:
A. the pre-service teacher's teaching skill for observation by Associate Teacher;

or

B. teaching skills that the pre-service teacher would like to personally develop.
This is an entirely new skill for the students, so I need to make sure my instruction and teaching is
explicit.

Background to the learning:

A. References for teacher background knowledge
How to use Excel efficiently.

B. Identify students current knowledge

Question students about their knowledge of Excel graphs

Lesson resources:
IWB
Laptops
Workbooks
Lesson content:
A. Introduction ____ mins
Sit at tables and get out laptops and maths books
Ask if any students need to finish surveying allow five minutes only.
Ask students what they recall of tallies and some of the interesting pieces of data they
acquired whilst surveying the class
Have the IWB on, without excel up yet so students are aware of how to start the process

B. Development ____ mins

Explain to students that we will be completing a graph together before they commence
making their own
Start-up Excel, get the students to do this as well, each step will be done by me and then they
will complete the step
Show them how to enter data, tell them to do the same exact data
0-1 1-2 2-3 3-4 4-5
0 5 7 8 2
Go through each process of creating a graph
o Labelling the axis/title
o Adding special features to the graph
o How to change the increments of numbers
o Colours
Emphasise that I want them to create an appropriate graph that has every feature and is easy
to understand

C. Consolidation, practice, extension ____ mins

Students to begin their own graphs, using their data they have collected
Allow enough time for them to play around with Excel and perfect their graphs
Once students have completed their graph they can copy their graph onto a Word Document
and commence writing their written piece. First this step will be modelled on the IWB step by
step, then students will have the opportunity to correctly format their document and
commence writing their discussion.

D. Closure ____ mins

Walk around the classroom to check their graphs
What is something new you have learnt today?
What did you find easiest/hardest about converting your data into an Excel graph?
Post-lesson review and evaluation:

Student achievement:
To what extent were outcomes achieved? How did the students demonstrate this?
The students were once again able to achieve the learning outcomes to a high standard. They
attentively listened to instructions and then were able to copy my direction to gain new knowledge. At
the end of the lesson the students had all completed their graphs and transferred their data and
graphs to a word document and had added titles. They also commenced writing their discussion,
which was a decision I made to continue the lesson to 100 mins so they could continue their good
work.
Teaching effectiveness:
What have you learnt from the lesson?
What do you recommend for future lessons?
Comment on your effectiveness in the light of the objectives/outcomes of the lesson and your
self-development focus for the lesson, referring to both strengths and areas to be addressed.
I have learnt that if there is final a task that needs to be completed and the children are working
extremely well toward that goal it is important to continue their momentum and address the next part of
the task. This will allow for early finishers to still work on the same task as everyone else, just at a faster
pace. I also made the decision to expand this lesson to 2 lessons so the children had enough time to get
the task almost finished. I felt this double lesson was extremely successful, students completed a great
deal of work and were able to follow instructions well. I felt that my explicit instruction aided in their
completion of the outcomes and aided them in achieving a high quality standard of work.
