back to their own personality.
Evaluation
- Ask for feedback from participants.
- Ask what did they like about the game.
- Ask for what they would change in the game.
Target group: local and new comers (immigrants and refugees), suitable for all age groups,
for 15-50 people.
Objectives: The aim of the activity is to have solidare, friendly, welcoming and understanding
community when locals and migrants can meet together in a friendly atmosphere and to learn
from each other.
MATERIALS:
-Main cooking event: dedicated space, kitchen, food, cooking instruments, recipes, volunteer
helpers, place to eat.
- Team building activities: know your cities: projector, 2 blind maps next to each other on a
computer to be projected, 2 blind folders, little stickers, board to count the score.
- Activities: little papers, pen, hat, board to keep score and to draw (flipchart, white board or
black board)
Preparation: encourage several people from both migrant and local community if they want
to share their favourite recipes. These people will become the volunteer-chefs during your
event and they will lead the cooking session.
Promotion: in order to invite as many people as possible think about the ways to approach
both communities in your cities (both locals and migrants) you might use different
strategies to target different groups. These are some tips how to ensure high attendance:
social media events, word of mouth, flyers in cafs, invitation of friends, etc.
Firstly you can start to invite young and open-minded people in universities, schools or
associations involved in this kind of topic and target the harder groups afterwards. This event
is one in the series of activities aimed on community building; it is aimed to be repeated
regularly.
Preparation for the event:Schedule the event, you might also think about decorating the
place. Find below an outline of activities how we imagined it, but the activities can be
changed according to the peoples preferences and interests. Prepare tea corner for people
who want to refresh themselves during the event and chat.
Cooking:After a short break in the tea corner, ask the volunteer community chefs to stand at
their cooking space with the ingredients already prepared on the table for the particular
recipes they want to share with the others. It is good to have around 5 people per recipe + the
community chef. Ask people to join the chefs/recipes they would like to learn. Think about
volunteer-translators who are fluent in both migrant and local language and can help with the
translations and facilitate the discussions. Have the recipes prepared for the participants to
take home (you might even consider to make a little booklet full of recipes).
Charades: while the food is ready to go in the oven and the meals are being cooked, divide
the whole group into two for the charades. In advance prepare little papers with
words/expressions in three categories: talking, drawing and pantomime. It is important to
have the words/expressions in the language all the participants understand; you might
consider asking volunteer translators to help. Put all the papers in the hat and ask one
performer from each group to join you. They will draw one paper from the hat and both
groups are trying to guess the word on the paper. The performer is using drawing (no
letters, no numbers, no talking, no pointing), talking (cannot use the root of the word and
cannot spell the word), or pantomime (cannot speak or point) to describe the
word/expression. First team to guess obtains the points. You can consider to have one judge
per group to evaluate the results, as it can get little loud and messy. You can play the game
until the food is ready.
