Water Molecules on the Move!

Adapted from Discovery Education

Standard:
2nd Grade: Intro to Physics, Amber Kingery
2-PS1-4 Construct an argument with evidence that some changes caused by
heating or cooling can be reversed and some cannot.

Learning Outcomes:

Students will:
Observe that that heat causes molecules to move faster and cold
causes molecules to move slower.

Learning Targets:
I can describe that heat causes molecules to move faster.

Time Needed:
About 45 minutes Prepare lab beforehand
Hook/Anticipatory Set:

Media Power point #300 on Intro to Physics Play movie link for
hook.
Directed Instruction:

Media Power point #300 on Intro to Physics (Encourage

conversation and exploration!). Keep on for the duration of lesson,
it will guide you through lab. Dont forget to look at ide notes!

Guided Practice:
Introduce Lab.
For reference: (Molecules move faster when they are warmer and
slower when they are colder. The drop of food coloring spreads out
fastest in the hot water because the molecules are moving the
fastest of the three jars. The food coloring spreads out fairly quickly
in room temperature water and slowest in the cold water.
Eventually the food coloring spreads throughout all three jars)
Pass out materials to group. Explain:
Worksheet to fill out as they complete lab.

Materials needed:
3 clear jars ( Place at each group)
water (prepare for students)

What is different about each jar?

Why does the food color in each jar act differently?
