Case Study: I Dont Want to Start a Big Controversy.

A Faculty Discussion Concerning


Controversial Issues.

Group members: Benjamin Erickson, Kenna Bandura, Callie Walker

Students will be able to: Understand how to properly discuss and approach the controversial
issues such as religion, politics, and holidays at a different educational levels.

Learning Objectives:
1. Student will increase critical thinking skills.
2. Students will develop a greater appreciation for cultural diversity.
3. Students will learn how to materialize a healthy, balanced classroom.
4. Student will know how to approach controversial topics in an educational environment.

Activities and Procedures:


1. (5mins) Open discussion; why should there be limitations in the classroom?
2. (5 mins) Questionnaire tied in with initial discussion.
3. (8-10 mins) Overview on politics.
4. (5 mins) Review game (Green and Red cards).
5. (8-10 mins) Overview on religion
6. (5 mins) Review game (Green and Red cards).
7. (8-10 mins) Overview on holidays
8. (5 mins) Review game (Green and Red cards).
9. (5 mins) Group discussion; include questions from case study and our own questions.
10. (5-10 mins) Kahoot review game (if time permits).

Assessment (Leading back to objectives):


1. Open discussion relates to objectives one and two. Students are gathering and
preparing their initial thoughts for the discussions ahead and understanding the diversity
among students within the first few minutes of class.
2. Initial questionnaire relates to objectives one and two. This ties into the open discussion
and also allows students to see the initial divide of opinions in the classroom.
3. Review game (green and red cards) relates to objectives one, three, and four. Students
are encouraged to vote truthfully and then, if needed, have a mini debate between an
opposing classmate. This allows for critical thinking to emerge and the ability to see
multiple viewpoints of fellow peers.
4. Kahoot review game relates to one, two, and three. This review game is a general
overview of all topics discussed in class. Students will be assessed on their
understanding of the case study and appropriate ways to handle controversial issues.
Materials:
Printed out questionnaire sheets
Green and red squares, enough for the whole class
Phones required for kahoot

Opening Question: Why should there be limitations in the classroom? 3-4 minutes
(Class discusses as a group)

Summarize the case study (write on the whiteboard 3 main topics) 3-4 minutes
Politics: (Kenna) Right and wrong ways to approach each in the classroom
Holidays: (Callie) Right and wrong ways to approach each in the classroom
Religion: (Ben) Right and wrong ways to approach each in the classroom

Wrap up of the entire thing & play kahoot if time permits.
