Answer any two questions from section B. Each question is worth 25% of the total mark.

SECTION A
Answer the question from this section. This question is worth 50% of the paper.

1. Detail a design of a wireless sensing system with cloud based data storage/processing for a
particular sensing application of your choice. The design provided should outline the following
aspects.

a) Outline the application served by the connected system, giving a brief overview of what
physical phenomena is being monitored or controlled, how the data is to be used and who
the users of the system will be.
[10 Marks]

b) Draw a block diagram of the system including specific detail of the key elements of the
sensing device.
[10 Marks]

c) Justify your choice of technology for each of the following elements

i) Network architecture
ii) Sensor devices
iii) Microprocessor
iv) Wireless standard
v) Data collection and processing platform and application

SECTION B
Answer two questions from this section. Each question is worth 25% of the total mark.

2. a) Describe the key features of a wireless standard used for personal area networking.
[5 Marks]

b) Give two examples from different domains of the types of applications that personal area
networking would be appropriate for and explain what are the key design choices that must
be made when designing such a network.
[10 Marks]

c) Giving realistic figures, demonstrate the impact of the duty cycle of a node (i.e. the time it is
either transmitting or receiving) on the lifetime of a battery powered node.
[10 Marks]

3. a) Draw the Internet reference model for packet networks and illustrate the functionality of each
of the layers.
[10 Marks]

b) Most Internet applications make use of the TCP protocol. Explain briefly its main functions
and describe any issues it might have for real-time application.
[5 Marks]

c) Consider the statement - With the billions of devices expected with the internet of things,
IPv6 is vital. Identify the reasoning for such a statement and justify an opinion on if this is
correct.
[6 Marks]

d) A packet with 192.168.1.147 in the destination address arrived at the router. The router has
two entries in the routing table: 192.168.1.0/24 and 192.168.1.128/25. Which one will the
packet follow?

4 a) Consider an environmental monitoring application in a large city where a number of sensor

nodes must be connected to various devices. Outline 5 different types of sensors that you
might wish to deploy giving a brief description of each.
[7 Marks]
b) Describe three aspects of the technical specification of a sensor that must be taken into account
when choosing a sensor for a particular application. Give a brief description of why each is
important.
[6 Marks]
c) A temperature sensor is specified for a specific application with a range of -10 C to 40oC. This
o

range results in an output that is between 0 volts and 5 volts. Its output is sampled with an 8-
bit ADC with a sampling frequency of 1kHz.
i) According to Nyquist what is the maximum input frequency of the system?
ii) Suggest what bandwidth anti-aliasing filter would be appropriate?
iii) Calculate the resolution of this sensor system.
iv) Estimate the root mean square (rms) quantisation noise that is generated by this process.
