ROOM 130 NEWS NOTE

You may have heard that weve been raising butterflies in our classroom. It was pretty fascinating to
watch their transformation, and this week we released them outside. The performance we saw at
Krannert was about the life cycle of a butterfly as well. As always,
feel free to email me if you have any questions or concerns. Miss Booth

SOCIAL/EMOTIONAL [

Trying new things can be intimidating. When were feeling scared, we need courage to help us continue.
We can find courage by believing in ourselves, thinking positive thoughts, and visualizing success. We
shared stories of bravery such as the first time we went underwater, the first time we rode a bike
without training wheels, etc. If we never tried new things, life would be boring.

READING
We know that the only way to get better at reading is to spend time reading. Our goal is to read 40
minutes a day (20 at school and 20 at home), but sometimes finding the motivation to read at home
can be a challenge. We want to establish these good habits now, so that when summer starts, we
won't forget to keep practicing. A bedtime story can be a great way to build a routine of reading.

WRITING
After a lot of reading and research, we made a list of facts that we learned about the ocean. Then,
we started writing our very own nonfiction papers about the ocean. Each student will include at least
three facts that he/she thinks are interesting or important. We know that nonfiction means not
fake, so everything we write will be factual.

MATH
Earlier in the year, we learned how to use the greater than (>) and less than (<) signs, but it had
been a while, so we decided to review. We use the greater than sign when the first number is larger,
and we use the less than sign when the first number is smaller. We can remember how to use these
signs because the open end looks like a mouth, and it always wants to eat the larger number. After
successfully comparing two numbers, we then challenged ourselves to compare addition and subtraction
expressions. For example, 56 + 3 > 25 - 4 and 34 + 2 < 87 - 1

SCIENCE
Youve probably heard that our classroom is turning into an Under the Sea habitat. Weve
brainstormed a lot of ideas and made a list of animals that we might find in the ocean. Well continue
to decorate our classroom throughout the rest of the year to make it feel as though were actually
scuba-diving deep under the sea. Not only is it fun, it keeps the kids engaged until the very end.
