730, IS-8, or IS-10 was a Soviet
heavy tank form the Cold

development of the IS series. During
development, it was called IS-8 and IS-9.
It was accepted into production in 1952 as
the IS-10, but due to the political climate
in the wake of Stalins death in 1953, it was
renamed T-10. The biggest differences from
its direct ancestor, the IS-3 was a longer hull,
seven pairs of road wheels instead of six, a
larger turret mounting a new gun with fume
extractor, an improved diesel engine, and
increased armour. General performance was
similar, although the T-10 could carry more
ammunition. T-10s (like the IS
tanks they replaced)
were deployed

Some older western sources

The M1078 has been one of the most useful

trucks in Afghanistan and Iraq over the past
few years, and I just had to build one. So I
set to work on the 1:35 Trumpeter kit, with
added Voyager and DEF Model accessories.
The main reason for using the Voyager etch
was the cab interior, or the lack of one! I
added a little scratchbuilding and in order
show off the insides I opened
up one of the cab doors, which
took a little persuasion with a
sharp knife! I also used a set of
DEF Model wheels to further
enhance the detail.
Soon I was ready to paint, and

n the wake of the collapse of
many of the worlds former
colonial powers following the
end of World War II, conflicts
erupted as nationalist groups sought to gain
independence from their former European
masters, and South Africa in the 1960s
found itself surrounded by such conflicts.
The war for independence in Rhodesia, and
more pressingly the civil war in Portuguese
Angola on their north western border and
the rise of SWAPO (South West African

German colony of Namibia captured by
South Africa in 1915 and held under UN
Mandate were cases in point. The Soviet
Union took considerable interest in the rise
of these new nationalist movements and
provided both weapons and advisors to assist
them in the hope of seducing them into
the socialist fold, and it was this assistance
which led directly to the development of
South Africas G5 howitzer and its motorised
variant the G6 Rhino. It started with the

MDF Scaled Down #6
By Andy Evans
Built by Blackburn at Brough, the Buccaneer epitomises the very
essence of the fast, low-level ground attack concept, coupled with an
inherently stable ride. The Buccaneer was designed in the late 1950s
as a low-level, long range, high speed, strike/attack/recce aircraft for
carrier operations. It was produced in two main variants, the S.1 and
the much improved and more powerful S.2, serving with both the
Royal Navy and later the RAF from 1965 to 1994. Having enjoyed a
successful, albeit relatively uneventful, career with the Royal Navy, the
Buccaneer realised its true potential with the RAF and South African Air
Force where it soon proved itself to be an immensely strong,
manoeuvrable and reliable aircraft with a better speed, range and
weapons carrying capability than many others. This was borne out
during the many NATO exercises but came to public attention during
Operation Granby in the Gulf War. Here twelve Buccaneers were
dispatched at three days notice, initially to laser designate targets for
Tornado bombers, and later in the campaign, they acted as both
Tornado designators and bombers in their own right whilst carrying
out missions dropping their own 1000lb LGBs. In total the type flew
216 Gulf sorties, destroying numerous bridges, aircraft shelters,

runways, command bunkers, ammunition stores and even

other aircraft. The Buccaneer was prematurely withdrawn
from service in 1994 as a result of arms reduction talks and
the subsequent rationalisation of RAF assets, being replaced
in the maritime strike role by more modern Tornado IDS
aircraft. This new MDF Scaled Down from SAM Publications
takes you into the heart of the Buccaneer, as we go faster,
lower, longer!

Competition, and this months
winner is Dutch modeller Pieter Siegel
with his winter-coloured T-34 Beutepanzer.
Pieter says says, this is basically the 1:35
Dragon Beutepanzer with additional skirts
and other accessories. I first sprayed the
model in Russian Green, weathered it and
then added a coat of German Sand, and
added some window cleaner. I then applied
more weathering, chipping and staining.
Finally I applied of another coat of window
cleaner as detailed by Mike Rinaldi, and the
added a winter White application, and more
weathering. I then added some mud for the
look I was after. Congratulations Pieter, a
worthy winner!

with the 0.303 inch Bren light machinegun)
was then superseded by the Carrier Universal
from around 1940, and despite the new
designation, the generic name Bren Carrier
stuck throughout the war. A steering wheel,
rather than levers, that made driver training
much easier, directed the carrier. The wheel
turned the front two wheel suspension units
laterally, being mounted on a cross tube that
ran through the vehicle. This movement
bowed the tracks into a curve, which the
vehicle followed. Further movement of the
steering wheel operated the track brakes
resulting in a sharp skid turn.
The carrier had the Horstmann slow-
motion type suspension with coil springs.
Wheels consisted of rear drive sprocket
and front idler, plus three solid tyre wheels
comprising the first two sprung together with
a single return roller and the third one sprung
singularly with no return roller. A Ford V8

The Cavalry Carriers built by Nuffield

the British Expeditionary Force. There they
were employed as personnel carriers as the
cavalry role was clearly not practical in the
face of the marauding panzers.
The Scout Carrier was also intended as
a light support vehicle for the cavalry. In
this case it was anticipated that the weapons
would be fired from the vehicle rather than
dismounted. This meant that all round
protection was proved for the crew. This
carrier type likewise utilised the basic

this may partly explain why so few were
ordered. In addition the armoured car and
the armoured personnel carrier had largely

rougher texture on the turret sides, I used Mr

Surfacer 500, built up with an old brush.
The model was first primed in Citadel
Chaos Black, and then covered in Tamiya
Russian Green. The unit tactical sign was
hand painted, and some weathering was
added with paint chips and rust. After the
paint had fully dried, I sprayed the model
in hairspray, and the randomly applied
off-white mixes over the entire surface.
Then I carefully removed this with
water and a stiff brush, but be
careful and remove just a little bit
at a time, so you dont remove too
much at once. With the weathering
complete, different washes and
filters and some mud and dust was
made from pastels, plaster and static
grass, and this was applied to the chassis,
running gear and other selected areas. For
the ever-present un-ditching log I used a
piece of branch from the garden and I added
a figure for good measure.
I hope this project will inspire you to try a
worn winter vehicle.

During the opening phase of the war, a huge force
of Iraqis advanced on the city of Khorramshahr,
supported by 500 T-55 and T-62 tanks. A scratch
force of Iranian regular and paramilitary units,
which included one squadron of Chieftains from
the 92nd Tank division, which was, and still is,
considered an elite Iranian unit, defended the
city. The Iraqi forces made steady advances except
when they encountered the Chieftains, which
repeatedly stopped them dead and inflicted heavy
casualties on the Iraqi armour. They were such a
problem the Iraqis withdrew and set up siege lines.
The Chieftains were destroyed in co-ordinated
surprise attacks as part of a wider Special Forces
offensive, and Khorramshahr fell soon after.

actions took place, it was not until June 1981
that the Iraqis launched a determined attack to

The Iranians repulsed the Iraqi units. The 92nd
Armoured Division were deployed in the city with
fifty to sixty tanks facing up to 400 Iraqi T-55 and
T-62s. The Chieftains strong armour and long
range gun again proved very effective and capable
of taking out the enemy tanks long before they
came into their own maximum range, just as it
was supposed to. In September 1981, the Iranians
launched an operation to relieve Abadan and push
the Iraqis back. They succeeded but at great cost,
the lack of planning and reckless use of armour
to support human wave charges left thousands
dead and 170 tanks - including many Chieftains

And so it was that
one-day, I finished

in my stash there resided a
Dragon Panther Ausf D early,
a kit brought out years before
the Zvezda kit, but pretty sound

magazines and books my crafty mind
figured out that with minimal effort I could
actually turn it into an early Panther Ausf A.
I could use the hull and running gear from
the Dragon kit and somehow somewhere I
needed the later Ausf A turret. A plea for help
on an armour forum resulted in the gift from
a fellow modeller in South Africa of a Tamiya
Panther Ausf G early, sans lower hull, wheels
and tracks. Perfect!
The kit duly arrived in the mail, was
inspected, tossed onto the stash and my
mind wandered to other projects, and was
totally forgotten, so much so that in the
interim I sold the second Dragon Panther
Ausf D to a friend. Then at the end of last
year I remembered the whole concept and

A Skyraider was considered one of the finest attack and close air support aircraft ever built.
Skyraiders proved critical during the Korean War and over the jungles of North Vietnam. The
airplane that became the AD Skyraider (redesignated A-1 in 1962) evolved from a 1943 Navy decision to
combine the dive-bombing and torpedo mission into one aircraft. First flown in 1945, the Skyraider entered
US Navy service the following year. Later nicknamed Spad for its old-school design and appearance,
reminiscent of the famous World War I aircraft, the Skyraider earned a reputation for ruggedness that not
only packed a punch, but also brought back many an airman, despite taking heavy damage from enemy fire.
Some AD pilots also trained for an atomic war, practicing long-range flights to deliver nuclear bombs at low
altitude. A-1s were also part of the first attacks against North Vietnam following the Tonkin Gulf Incident, and
in June 1965, a pair of Skyraiders even shot down a North Vietnamese MiG-17 in air-to-air combat. It was
perhaps in the Sandy Combat Search And Rescue role the USAF Skyraider earned most respect, and its heavy
payload and long loiter time proved vital in rescue of downed airman in Southeast Asia. The Skyraider was
also used by the air forces of South Vietnam, France, Cambodia, Chad and Gabon, and the Royal Navy
operated a dedicated airborne early warning version from her aircraft carriers, and the Swedish Air Force used
the Skyraider as a target tug. All told, 3,180 Skyraiders rolled off the Douglas Aircraft Company assembly line,

MAFVA
Miniature Armoured Fighting Vehicles Association
MAFVA exists to promote and interest in AFVs
and their associated equipment, and to act as a
non-profit making organisation for the
collection and dissemination of information. We
try to answer queries and seek sources of
information for our fast growing international
membership, and to encourage correspondence
between those with similar interests. The
interests within MAVA run from Wold War One
to the present day, although a greater emphasis
is centred on the Second World War. The
majority of members make and/or collect
models, and there are many who only gather
information on military subjects, whilst others
work on, or even collect full sized military
vehicles. In addition to this we aim to provide
our members with a quality bi-monthly
magazine Tankette. Local branches are being
continually formed both in the UK and overseas,
and are encouraged to hold meetings, displays
and competitions to enable their members to
get more out of their hobby, by meeting others
with similar interests and to share information
and expertise.

Freedom Fighter, Tiger II and Tigereye

MDF Scaled Down #5
By Andy Evans
One of the most enduring military aircraft designs ever produced, the F-5
series has served for more than four decades since its initial flight on July
31, 1963. The F-5 remains an agile, highly manoeuvrable, reliable
supersonic fighter; lead-in trainer and aggressor, combining advanced
aerodynamic design, engine performance and low operating costs. More
than 2,600 were built by Northrop and with even more built under co-
production and licensing agreements with Canada, the Republic of
China, the Republic of Korea, Spain and Switzerland. From the F-5's first
delivery in 1964 to its final one in 1989, every aircraft has delivered the
performance as promised, and approximately two-thirds of the original
production F-5's remain operational in twenty-six countries, including the
United States.
Being smaller and simpler than contemporaries such as the F-4, the
F-5 cost less to both purchase and operate, making it a popular export
aircraft. The F-5A Freedom Fighter entered service in the early 1960s,
and although the USAF at the time had no acknowledged need for a
light fighter, it did procure roughly 1,200 T-38 Talons, which were di-
rectly based on the F-5 design. After winning the International Fighter
Aircraft competition in 1970, a program aimed at providing effective
low-cost fighters to American allies, Northrop introduced the second-
generation F-5E Tiger II in 1972. The F-5 was also developed into a Cover: Illustration Purposes Only

dedicated reconnaissance version, the RF-5 Tigereye and the

ill-fated F-20 Tigershark. For the F-5 it has been a fast ride
into aviation history!
The story of the F-5 is brought to life in this new MDF Scaled
Down from SAM Publications, and the types background; oper-
ators, colour schemes and roles are all included, along with
colour profiles, technical diagrams and extensive walk arounds.
This is a must have book for the enthusiast and modeller alike.
