1. Compass Bowl
The MC-18 is a bearing compass for class A magnetic compass and complies with IMO
resolution A.382(1 0), A.694(17), ISO standards and IEC60945.

The MC-180 of compass bowl was designed to be capable of combining with azimuth reading
device, binnacles, transmitting system.
In addition to these appliances, it also can be available with the reflection tube to read out at a
steering position

I 1.1 Composition
1.1.1 Compass Card
The MC-180 is magnetic q.>mpass bowl with card 180mm in diameter
J It has been graduated in 360 angle degrees starting from north clockwise. The cardinal point
has been indicated by the capital letters N, S, E and W and intermediate points NE, SE, SW,
NW also marked. Especially, north point is indicated by triangle symbol.

The compass card is printed on both sides the graduation to be coincided so as to be capable of
reading out not only at installation position but also from periscope tube.
This compass card can be read clearly in conjunction with lubber mark of fore and aft gimbal
axis

These lubber marks are within 0.5 of the fore and aft gimbal axis.

The name of manufacturer, SARACOM is marked in conspicuous place on the compass card and verge
ring with type and serial number

1.1.2 Liquid
Compass fluid 40475 is identified with trade name of Shellsol T manufactured by Whihelm E.H.
Biesterfeld.
This is composed of the mixture of aliphatic hydrocarbons.
It also can be identified with EINECS Number of2650672 and EC number of650-00I-OO-O.
The type ofliquid used is indicated on the bowl in near of the filling plug.
This liquid is colourless and free from turbidity and formation of flocks

1.1.3 Glass
The top and bottom glass covers of compass have a thickness of 6mm and toughened glass is used.

1.1.4 Directional system magnets

The magnet moment of the directional system has 2.6Am
The pole of the directional system magnets has been arranged in such a way that no excess sextantal or
octantal deviations will be produced by the influence of the correcting device.

The magnet used in the directional system has 53,000 Aim of coercivity and of 1.15 T of remanence.

1.1.5 Compass gimballing


The gimbal axes lie in one plane, within a tolerance of lmm.
The angle formed by the outer and inner gimbal axes is 901 o and the vertical planes through
the gimbal axes intersect to within I mm of the pivot point.
The outer gimbal axis lies in the fore and aft direction.

The directional system mounting in the compass bowl has been constructed to be rotated freely even if
the compass bowl is tilted in any direction at 10.
The gimbal ring revolves freely about the inner axis up to 40. That's why the compass bowl is
balanced so that its verge ring or top glass cover settles in the horizontal plane to within 2 when the
gimbal ring is fixed in a horizontal position.

1.1.6 Centering of Azimuth Reading Device


The rotating axis of the azimuth reading device and the vertical rotating axis of the compass
card are not different on a horizontal plane.
The rotation axis has a center boss on the top glass cover of the compass to fit the azimuth
reading device.

1.1.7 Pivot Bearing


The pivot point is not deviate from the horizontal plane through the inner gimbals axis by more
than lmm.
The pivot bearing is equipped with a vertical spring suspension as following.

Therefore, the directional system mounting in the compass bow I returns to the original position
on its pivot when the bowl is inverted and then returned to its normal position.

When the card is given an initial deflection of 2 under the horizontal magnetic flux
density of 6J.1.T, first on one side of the meridian and then on the other, it returns to
within 0.5 of its original position.

1.2.4 Swirl error


With the compass rotating at a uniform rotational frequency of 6/s in horizontal plane
the horizontal magnetic flux density of 6J.1.T, the card deflection when the bowl has been
rotated 180 don't exceed 6 from the magnetic meridian.
Alternatively, when rotating at a uniform rotational frequency of 1.5/S the horizontal
magnetic flux density of 6J.1.T, the card deflection when the bowl has been rotated 360
don't exceed 2 from the magnetic meridian.

1.2.5 Period
The card is deflected 40 from the magnetic meridian and held there for at least I Os. It is
then released and the time taken between the first and second passing of the original
heading is not less than 12.2s

2. Binnacle
The Aluminum BC-180 binnacle is designed to accept the MC-180 type magnetic reflector
compass with a 180mm diameter compass card.
A hood fitted to the binnacle will protect the compass from the elements.
The BC-180 binnacle is a type A 1 of such a design and height that the magnets of the compass
directional system is at least 1m above the undersurface of the binnacle deck fitting.

The BC-180 binnacle has a reflector tube fitted to allow the compass reading to be viewed from
below decks.
The vertical distance between the mid-plane of the directional system magnets and the gimbal
bearings center of the compass supplied is 22.55mm
The binnacle and fittings are free from magnetic material with exception of correcting device.
All materials of the binnacle can be referred from 2.3 drawings.

All materials used are of sufficient strength.


The coercivity of the corrector magnets is present at parameter 2.1.3 and the other material
used for correcting induced field such as D-sphere and flinders bar has a high permeability, a
low coercivity and negligible remanence.

2.1 Composition
2.1.1 Binnacle Body and Hood
The body of the BC-180 is made of the welding with cast-aluminum and original aluminum
plate.
Cast aluminum has been anodized and coated to protect against sea water corrosion.
The hood is made of plastic and fitted to binnacle with two knurled screws.

The holes of the binnacle deck fitting are made for any misalignment in respect of the fore and
aft line of the ship by turning the binnacle through an angle of maximum 6

BC-180 BINNACLE BODY DETAIL

2.1.2 Compass Dlumination


The BC-180 is provided the illuminations powered by AC and DC.
These powers are input via the dimmer switch to adjust the brightness. All electrical
connections are made in a watertight terminal box located at the base of the binnacle.

2.1.3 Compass Corrections
For the compass correction, the B-C correction by rod magnets, the heeling error correction by
the magnet suspended by chain inside the bucket tube and the D correction by two spherical
correctors can be done.

The rod magnets for the B-C correction can be inserted into 14 bores, inside the binnacle, from
the starboard to the port and from the front to the rear sides.
The B correction rod magnets are housed in two vertical rows of horizontal holes that are
parallel to the fore/aft line of the ship. The C correction rod magnets are housed in a single
vertical row ofhorizontal holes that are parallel to the athwart ships line of the ship.
The magnets are held in place by spring pressure. There are fourteen holes in each row, with
No.I at the bottom and No.l4 at the top. The distance from the center of the compass to the
bottom hole is 530mm and to the top hole is 290mm.
Holes used for horizontal corrector magnets are numbered and the numbers read from the
bottom upwards.
The binnacle is provided with six powerful magnets and six weak magnets.
The north seeking end of the magnets are identified by red marking. Access to the B-C
correction is through the access door on the aft side of binnacle.
These are capable of correcting a coefficient B and C of at least (720/H) 0

For the provision to secure the correcting devices of the binnacle against unauthorized access
and unintentional displacement, the cover for 14 bores is provided.

The magnet for the heeling error correction is suspended by chain inside the bucket tube
located on the center axis of the binnacle.
The distance from the center of the compass to the lowest position is 995mm and to the top
position is 280mm.

Access to the corrector is through the access door on the aft side of binnacle.

Two soft iron spherical quadrantal correctors for the D correction are located on two arms at
the port and starboard sides of the binnacle.
These correctors can be moved towards and away from the compass. It will be capable of
correcting a deviation up to I oo ~-
The level of the compass magnet is on the same center line as the D corrector.
The distance to the center of the compass is marked on each support. The minimum distance
from the center of the corrector to the center of the compass is 270mm. The maximum distance
from the center of the corrector to the center of the compass is 520mm.

The specification of the corrector is as follows

The flinders bar also can be available for the correction. The pipe contained flinders bars is
adhered to the fore side of the binnacle.
It has a length of 61 Omm and a diameter of 80mm. The distance between the center of the
flinders bar case and the center of the compass is 280mm 3mm. The top end of the case is
30mm above the level of the compass card.
The flinders bars are cylindrical, hollow and flat ended.
Generally, the flinders bars of one 300mm, one 150mm, two 75mm are provided and PVC
spacer tubes are supplied so the pole of the flinders bars can be positioned level with the
compass magnet.

2.1.4 Compass Reflector


A 15 section, on both sides of the lubber line, of the compass card can be viewed through the
reflector tube from below decks. The maximum length of the reflector tube is two meters. The
viewing mirror angle can be varied and is double sided.
The reverse side of the viewing mirror is darkened mirror for night observation of the compass
reading. A second fixed viewing mirror is positioned opposite the variable viewing mirror to
allow a second person to observe the compass reading.
The reflector tube is fitted to the BC-180 binnacle.
The course as read from the projected image agrees with the course read at the main lubber
mark to within 0.5

2.1.5 Clinometer (optional)


A clinometer can be attached on the front side of the binnacle. This is an optional fitting.

2.3 Operation
<D The hood can be removed by loosing the two knurled retaining screws
Cl> By loosing the screw on the port side of mirror housing, the viewing angle of the mirror
can be adjusted by turning the knob on the starboard side of the mirror housing.
The access door, on the aft side of binnacle, can be moved after loosening the retaining
screws. This will permit access to the compass illumination, the reflector lens and the
compass corrections.

3. Azimuth Reading Device


The AZ-180 azimuth reading device is designed for group I of which necessary sights required
to aim at distant objects exactly.
It is belongs to the MC-180 compass bowl which has 180mm of card diameter.
All parts of azimuth reading device are manufactured from non-magnetic material.
The field of view of the AZ-180, azimuth reading device is more than 5 in the horizontal plane
on each side ofthe line of sight.
The altitude range covered by the AZ-180 azimuth reading device is at least 5(15) below and
30(more than 90) above the horizon using observation mirror.

3.1 Composition
The vertical bearing thread of the object vane and the slit of the eye vane are parallel to each
other.
The plane of sight defmed by the object and eye vanes are perpendicular to the top glass or to
the verge ring of the compass respectively and the plane of sight is pass through the rotation
axis of the azimuth reading device.

In addition it contains the horizontal bearing thread for card bearing, as well as the index mark
for bearing relative to the ship's head on the verge ring graduation.
The mirror used to take bearings of high altitude objects is attached and could be adjusted in
such a way that reflection plane is parallel to the plane of sight in any position to within the
tolerances 0.3.

4. Digital Signal Converter


The TM-42 is a device to displaY. a ship's heading on the fourth 7-segments using the fluxgate
mounted on magnetic compass.
The TM-42 has basically two principle functions. The first is to provide a backup heading
when a master compass on ship was lost. The second is to supply the NMEA-0183 signal to
major navigational equipments through two output ports.
In addition TM-42 has optional functions such as calibration, the selection of NMEA-0 183
output format.

4.2 Operation
Power On I Off
It can be switch on the TM-42 by pressing the ON/OFF button shortly on the front panel and if
you press the ON/OFF button a few seconds, it will be switch off.

IHumination Dimmer
In no calibration mode, press the DIM+ button consecutively to increase brightness on the
button LED and 7-segments, on the contrary press the DIM- button consecutively to decrease
brightness on the button LED and 7-segments.

Deviation I Variation Calibration


1. Variation Calibration
In heading display mode, if you press DEV/CAL button for a few second, it will be
displayed VARc on the 7-segments. Then you can choose either Deviation or Variation
Calibration by pressing DIM+ or DIM- button. If you select the VARC and press the
DEV/CAL button, It will be displayed a current correction value for variation and goes into
a step to input a correction value for variation.
A correction value can be modified by pressing the DIM+ or DIM- button and if it was
completed, you can escape from the calibration mode by pressing the DEV/CAL button.

2. Deviation Calibration
As the variation calibration, press the DEV/CAL button for a few second to come into the
calibration mode and then select the DEVc. If you press the DEV/CAL button once again,
you can get into a first stage of the deviation calibration.
At fiTSt stage, you should select an address correspondence with 0 to 350 by 10 step
using DIM+ or DIM- button. If you selected an address to input a correction value for the
deviation, you can get into the second stage to ensure a correction value stored in the
appropriate address by pressing the DEV/CAL button.
At second stage, you can confirm only but not allowed a correction. If you want to shift to
another address, it can be returned to the previous stage being capable of shifting an address
by pressing DIM- button. To modify a current correction value, you can get into the third
stage by pressing the DEV/CAL button.
At third stage, it can be input -9.9 to +9.9 by 0.1 step using DIM+ or DIM- button. If it
is completed, return to the first stage by pressing the DEV/CAL button.
To quit the calibration, press the DEV/CAL button for a few second regardless of any stage
or any mode

3. Caution
In case of Deviation Calibration, As you record a deviation correction value by 10 step in
the following correction table and then input an address 0 to address 350 at once with
confirmation of each value, a more accurate calibration can be performed. Regardless of
any mode, you can get in or escape by pressing the DEV/CAL button for a few second.

4.3 Technical Specification

I. The terminal block of the TM-42 is arranged as following <table 2>. Connect the TM-42's
cable carefully with reference of <table 2>.

2. It has two serial asynchronous ports to enable to transmit the NMEA-0183 sentence and of
which signal can select with 4800bps, 9600bps, variable digit or fixed digit by setting of Dip
S/W. In addition it can be selected and transmitted with a desired NMEA sentence such as
HOM, HOG, HDM&HRC, and HRC. Refer to <Table 3> for setting.

4.4 Installation

I. The TM-42 can be mounted by fixing the front panel.


2. The TM-42 is embedded one PC board which fixed on the rear of the front panel
3. After mounting the TM-42, it is necessary to take good care of the connection with each
signal and power line in the terminal block since a fault connection may damage to main unit

4.5 Operational and functional test

When it is completed a installation and cabling, you should check the equipment by performing
a following normal operational test.

I. Check a connection for each cable once again.


2. Connect between Fluxgate and TM-42 with reference of table 3.
3. Apply a power source and confirm that the heading displayed on the TM42 is same as the
heading of magnetic compass.
4. Check that output ports of the NMEA-0183 have a normal output.

4.5 Trouble Shooting

I. Display with the ErrF of error message


When the connection between FLUXGA TE and TM-42 is abnormal or released, this
\ massage appears on the display.

:r;e- check the connection with FLUXGATE once again.

2. The heading on the TM-42 is different with the heading of Magnetic compass.

llff Correct a deviation about a specified angle by performing deviation calibration.

3. The difference between the heading on the TM-42 and the heading of Magnetic compass has
a rated value for every angle

G.~ Correct a deviation by Performing the variation calibration.

4. Nothing displays even power source applied

!@? It may be occurred when the brightness of the TM-42 set with the lowest and then switch
off. In this case, press the DIM+ button to increase the brightness
