2.1.3 Compass Corrections
For the compass correction, the B-C correction by rod magnets, the heeling error correction by
the magnet suspended by chain inside the bucket tube and the D correction by two spherical
correctors can be done.
The rod magnets for the B-C correction can be inserted into 14 bores, inside the binnacle, from
the starboard to the port and from the front to the rear sides.
The B correction rod magnets are housed in two vertical rows of horizontal holes that are
parallel to the fore/aft line of the ship. The C correction rod magnets are housed in a single
vertical row ofhorizontal holes that are parallel to the athwart ships line of the ship.
The magnets are held in place by spring pressure. There are fourteen holes in each row, with
No.I at the bottom and No.l4 at the top. The distance from the center of the compass to the
bottom hole is 530mm and to the top hole is 290mm.
Holes used for horizontal corrector magnets are numbered and the numbers read from the
bottom upwards.
The binnacle is provided with six powerful magnets and six weak magnets.
The north seeking end of the magnets are identified by red marking. Access to the B-C
correction is through the access door on the aft side of binnacle.
These are capable of correcting a coefficient B and C of at least (720/H) 0
