Energy consumption of the nation is increasing day by day in the area of domestic, industry,
agriculture, transportation. Increase in consumption of petroleum product is alarming. In India
per capita consumption of diesel as fuel is 28.30 million tones which turns to be about 43.2% amongst other petroleum products. Such enormous requirement of fuel is met by importing crude. There is heavy dependency on import. Energy crisis have led to a vast research on various subject of automotive sector and its system and is one of the largest sector of fuel consumption. In the automotive sector continuous research is observed towards fuel saving. For this various methodologies are employed considering the diesel engine with extensive research and its implementation. One of the research area is of an adiabatic engine concept of low heat rejection engine. In an IC engine about 33 percent of the total chemical energy of the inlet fuel is converted in to useful crankshaft work and rest of the fuel energy lost in the form of heat. A Low Heat Rejection (LHR) engine employs suitable insulation of thermal barrier coating material. Heat loss to the coolant, exhaust, conduction, convection and radiation are reduced due to the insulation provided on inner surface of combustion chamber which results in high combustion chamber temperatures. Previous studies shows that in ideal condition thermal efficiency of an internal combustion engine is about 35.6 percent but in actual conditions it comes to about 25 percent. So low hear rejection engines can be consider for improvement in thermal efficiency of an IC engine. If an adiabatic engine concept is applied heat can be minimise also ideal thermal efficiency can improve about 48 percent. The reduction of heat losses can be utilized in useful work done. The engine brake power and thermal efficiency both can be increased. Adiabatic engine concept can be considered as promising sources of research. Various thermal barrier coatings have been used by researchers to achieve the stage of adiabatic engine. Most of the researchers used diesel engine with ceramic coating. There are various types of ceramic coating are available but plasma spray coating technology used widely in IC engines. It also true to state here, that adiabatic engine with zero heat loss is not possible.
