Students will be able to recognize and describe similes and
metaphors.
Students will be able to write out their own similes and/or
metaphors.
Students will be able to tell the difference between a simile and a
metaphor

Students will be asked what they believe is the definition of a
metaphor and simile

Teacher Clarity
At the beginning of the unit and/or
project, the teacher will clarify the purpose of the lesson and
provide criteria for success of the students.
Checking for Understanding
Have students attempt to write down the definition
of a metaphor/simile
Ask a student to explain what a metaphor/simile is
Students will give an example of a metaphor/simile
from a piece of literature they may have read
Guided Practice
Students will write one or two metaphors based on
their day
Students will write one or two similes based on
their day
Differentiated Instruction
Provide students with visual representations along with the written
definition
Examples of similes and metaphors will be provided

Students will find objects in or around their home to describe with
similes and metaphors

Lesson Closure
Students will write a journal entry about two things they learned,
and one question they may have
Post-Assessment/Summative
Students will answer a quiz question defining what a simile and
metaphor is.
Students will write an example of a simile or metaphor on their
quiz.
