EE 3210 - Internal Combustion Engines

Assignment
Sem - Jan2016

Consider yourself as a fresh design engineer in one of the engine manufacturing company that supplies diesel
engines to various industries used for electric generators or prime movers for other machines. Your company
newly collaborated with an automotive sector that was producing passenger cars powered by gasoline engines.
Since that automotive sector is intended to launch a new model under pickup truck segment with power ranging
350 kW. Due to lack of their experience on diesel engines the automotive sector is seeking collaboration with your
company to develop a new engine for their pickup truck.

Your company is intended to test your ability in many ways by assigning a group work to come up with suitable
diesel engine for above application. You are required to work in a group of three to complete this assignment.

Group Work

Within your group you have to design the suitable engine for the intended application. As it mentioned earlier,
expected power output is 350 kW with average piston speed not exceeding 8 m/s. Provide detailed design
specifying engine speed, displacement, number of cylinders, bore, stroke, mean effective pressure, torque and
fuel consumption. All parameters values should be within the typical reasonable values and should be consistent
with other values. Clearly state all the assumptions that you made while designing the engine. [15 marks]

Individual Work

Carryout complete thermal analysis on the selected engine working cycle to estimate the pressure and
temperature at every stage of the cycle. Estimate the thermal efficiency of the engine and comment on you
findings. [15 marks]

Avoiding Plagiarism Accusations

Please note that whilst some notes and materials will be provided to support this task it is expected that you will
carry out your own research and use a variety of information sources to complete the task. However, all of your

referenced or taking any data directly from any source which you include in your work will be regarded as
plagiarism and may result in you failing this part of the report or even the whole module. It is acceptable to use
quotes, photographs and/or diagrams from other sources, where appropriate, but these must be properly
referenced. Any quotations you wish to use from external sources must be less than 200 words in total for any
submission of your report and again must be cited and referenced correctly. All quotations must be shown within
