Please note:
1. Documental evidence for all the components/parts of the assessment such as the reports,
photographs, laboratory exam / tool tests are required to be attached to the assignment report
in a proper order.
2. The First Examiner is required to mark the comments in RED ink and the Second Examiners
comments should be in GREEN ink.
3. The marks for all the questions of the assignment have to be writte n only in the Component
CET B: Assignment table.
4. If the variation between the marks awarded by the first examiner and the second examiner lies
within +/- 3 marks, then the marks allotted by the first examiner is considered to be final. If the
variation is more than +/- 3 marks then both the examiners should resolve the issue in
consultation with the Chairman BoE.

Part A

Preamble

Rapid industrial development, urbanization and increase in agricultural production has led to
freshwater abstraction in many parts of the country as well as of the world. As the recharging of the
groundwater is not adequate, there is a rapid decrease in groundwater level in several parts of the
world. To overcome such problems Rainwater Harvesting can be adopted.
Rainwater Harvesting (RWH) is an important environment friendly approach which has double
benefit in both keeping the groundwater table undisturbed and charging the aquifer. Broadly there
are two ways of harvesting rainwater, Surface Runoff Harvesting (SRH) and Roof Top Rainwater
Harvesting (RTH). In urban area rainwater flows away as surface runoff and also leads to heavy
flooding. This runoff could be caught and used for recharging aquifers by adopting appropriate
methods known as Surface runoff harvesting.
In rooftop harvesting, the roof becomes the catchments, and the rainwater is collected from the roof
of the house/building stored and may be used to recharge ground water.
In this context, debate on the topic entitled Surface runoff harvesting is preferred over roof top
harvesting for ground water recharging in urban areas
Your debate should address the following: (10 marks)
1.1 Importance of rain water harvesting in urban areas
1.2 Select and discuss appropriate case studies related to SRH and RTH
1.3 Suggestion of a suitable method for ground water recharge using Surface runoff harvesting
1.4 Justification of the stance

Part B (40 marks)

B .1 The wedge B is used to raise the load of 1960N resting on block A as shown in Figure.1. What
horizontal force P is required to do this if the coefficient of friction for all surfaces is 0.20? Neglect
the weights of the blocks. Assume x as last two digits of your register No.

B .2 Figure.2 shows the dimensions of a slope constructed in a site. Two water pipe lines are laid
in this slope. Determine the centre of gravity of the entire slope system.

B. 3 Determine the reactions on a horizontal beam loaded as shown in Figure.3. The system is non-
concurrent, non-parallel. Neglect the weight of the beam. Assume x = Last two digits of your
