HOW TO WRITE A BOOK REVIEW ARTICLE

A book review should address a novel of your choice. You should concentrate on the
discussion about the valuable information which can be derived from the work in
question.

Overview of the Paper:

Your paper should consist of four general sections:

Introduction
The body of the paper
Conclusion and future directions
Literature cited

Length: 3-4 pages (4000 characters, i.e. 1200 words)


Font: 12, Times New Roman
Line Spacing: 1,5

What Goes into Each Section:

Section of the paper What it should contain

Introduction & Background Make the readers interested while introducing the
topic.
Provide the necessary background information re
authors life, origin of novel.

What period does the novel belong to? What are the
main features of this period? How was/is the novel
valued by critics?

Body of the Paper Summarize the plot in brief. What is the storyline?
Who are the main characters?
What is the general field or genre, and how does the
work fit into it?
Who is/are the protagonist(s)? Who is/are the
antagonist(s)? Give your opinion of them.
What is the author's style? Is it formal or informal?
State the authors purpose. Was the author trying to
give information, to convince the audience of a
belief? Is there a message and what is it?
What are the main themes/motives? Which symbols
do you recognize and what do they stand for?
Evaluate the novel for interest, accuracy,
objectivity, importance, thoroughness, and
usefulness to its intended audience. Show whether
the author's main arguments are true. Respond to
the author's opinions. What do you agree or
disagree with? And why?

Conclusion Summarize (briefly), analyze, and comment on the


content. State your general conclusions.
How did the novel affect you? Were any previous
ideas you had on the subject changed, abandoned,
or reinforced due to this? What personal
experiences you've had relate to the subject?
How well has the novel achieved its goal?
Would you recommend this novel to others? Why?

Literature Cited Cite the original source and any other that were
used.
