When compiling this, month's issue two factors began to impinge on the amount of space | had for editorial. The first of these was the number of adverts: good news for us, and good news think too for our readers. There's a tendency to think that everyone these days gets all their information from the Internet but | know from correspondence and from talking to people at shows that this isn’t the case. Second, there was a bewildering array of kits, accessories and books that had been reviewed by myself and our team of reviewers. Some of these came in as samples, but many were simply sent in by people who had bought a kit or read a good book. It made me think, however, about the vast number of products available to us now as modellers and how we, as a model magazine, present this information. | don’t want MMI to go down the route of being a catalogue for new products, nor do | want it to be a purely a showcase for newly released kits, built out of the box and painted and weathered toa high standard. There is certainly a place for some of that and you will find examples of both in these pages, but the model magazine needs to be something ‘more, something that is informative, visually appealing and, most of all, worth reading either for edification or enjoyment. | hope our articles this month and in future issues live up to those standards. First up this month we have the concluding part of ‘tukasz Orczyc-Musialek’s build of Zvezda new Tiger L.The Tiger theme continues as Chris Jerrett takes a break from modern armour to build one of the‘what- if’ German heavy tanks of World War Il, the VK4502(P). ‘There's a German theme to Noel Petroni’s return to these pages in the form of a diorama based around Lion Roar’s Zindapp KS750. The World War Il subjects then move to the Allied side with Roman Volchenkov's beautiful rendition of Bronco Models’ Staghound with 60lbs rockets. Another MMI regular, Ken Abrams, then presents our second Bronco kit this month, this time the diminutive GAZ-69. Finally, our friends in Spain, led by José Luis Lopez Ruiz, present some of the work recently on show at the AMT show in Torrent, Until next month, happy modelling, apes David Grummitt Editor ‘The winner of April's Spot the Difference Competition was Mrs, Jane Dawson of Keighley. Like the con- temporary British Conqueror tank, the M103 was designed to counter the Soviet heavies such as the Josef Stalin tanks during the Cold War (or the T-10 if a conventional World War Ii broke out). Originally designat: ed T43EI a series of 300 tanks were builtin the mid-1950s, but following unsatisfactory test- ing, were consigned to storage. However, with certain improve- ments, these were accepted for service under the new designa- tion M103 Heavy Tank. This recent ttle from Osprey’s New Vanguard series provides the required technical infor- mation, as well as placing the vehicle in the context of the post-war environment (includ- ing the Korean War and the Cuban Crisis). Also covered is the effect of internal politics, driven by influential individu- als and groups. The book is well illustrated throughout with black-and-white contemporary photographs, full-colour illus: trations and cutaway diagrams. The introduction sets out the condition of the armoured forces, both within the US Army and the US Marine Corps at the tend of the Second World War. With the majority oftheir inven tories worn-out, and with the Marine Corps lacking any heavy tanks, both services needed a new weapon capable of taking fon their Cold War opponents. In the ‘chronology’ section, the book covers the key stages of the tanks development, both 60 Miltary Modelcraft international A round up of the latest military les with the Army and more impor- tantly the US Marine Corps, who continued its improvement to roducea very effective weapon after the Army interest faded. ‘Developing the T-43 Heavy Tank, 1948-55' lays out the ini- tial program, to putting the tank into operation and its delivery within the Marine Corps as the MI03A1. This chapter also ex- plains the urgency to develop a successful tank, prompted by the start of the Korean War; the design of suitable weapon was a key element of a Tank Crash Program to bring the tank fleets up to a comparable standard with the Russians. Having effec- tively been abandoned by the ‘Army, the use ofthe tank by the Marine Corps has ample cover- age in the section detailing Its Use in service. The last stages of improvement from the M103A1 to M103A2 before retirement is also dealt with, along with de- scriptions of the limited number of variants produced, Given that the tankhad an op- erationallfe of 14 years, and for a significant period was the only US tank capable of engaging Russian heavy tanks, its place in history is certainly understated. ‘The operational M103A1 design used by the Marine Corps finally {ot the recognition it deserved when the Army had to borrow 72 tanks to fil gaps in its de- fences in Germany. The book is a highly recommended, and for many will help fil the space fon the bookshelf between the Sherman and the Abrams. Unfortunately, during the latter part of the twentieth century, it also de- veloped a reputation for brutal warfare. From post-colonial insurgencies,. through brush- fire wars, civil strife, wars over resources, to fulkblown con- ventional warfare, it has never been at rest. At any given time, a dozen or so of these conflicts have existed, and continue to haunt the length and breadth of the continent. From 1945, a true desire for post-colonial democratic reform lead, instead, to dictatorship, tyranny, corrup- tion, further conflict, and the stripping of natural resources ‘Africa@War’is a superb ground breaking series of short mono- graphs, providing insights into many of the lesser-known aspects of a number of these conflicts Volume 6 from the series manages to unveil, within its 64 pages, a number of startling events. It provides clarity to the military dimension of the initial post-colonial decade of strug- gle, teeming with Byzantine, convoluted and Machiavel- lian events. It also attempts to explain how the US Air Force flew more than 2000 sorties in active support of one side as It fought against a NATO ally, only to switch sides twelve months later to support the same ally, conducting the larg- est and most-audacious joint airborne assault ever seen in ‘Africa. Who would believe that the attempted secession of the province of Katanga would not only see the death (murder?) of the UN Secretary General, but also lead to bankrupting the UN itself? We also learn how British and European Katangan merce raries clashed with kith and kin fighting for the UN; while Cuban fought Cuban, thousands of rmiles from home. And why were a few hundred white mercenar- jes, once hailed as heroes for defeating amurderous insurrec- tion, later to be castigated and reviled for attempting to do the same thing? Lavishy illustrated with both black-and-white and colour ‘maps and images, it does jus tice to its efforts to unravel the complex and seemingly intra: table turmoil that encompassed the nation’s independence; a brutal chaos that continues to this day. The motor pool of the Swedish Army has changed drastically in the past decades. While during the Cold War domestic prod- ucts such as the S-Tank were dominant, this changed in the 1990s when large quantities of ex-East German Army ve- hicles were purchased. In the twenty-first century this change became even more effective with the purchase of state-of the-art weapons technology making the Swedish Army to- day one of the best-equipped in Europe. This publication shows the current motor pool of the Swedish Army, ranging from light tactical vehicles, via wheeled armour, artillery and airdefence systems to the most powerful tracked armour, such as the Leopard-2-based Strv 122. David Grummitt Title: German Armoured Formationsin the OZAK 1943-1945 ‘Author: Stefanodi Gusto Publisher: Tankograd Price: £1399 (pb) Aside from the well-known battlefields in the West, on the Eastern Front and in North Af rica, there was a small theatre of World War Il where the Panzers also proved decisive: the OZAK (Operations Area Adriatic Coast land). What makes the OZAK so special were the unusual German armoured formations deployed there with an excep: tional range of strange vehicles that could be found nowhere else on any other frontline of World War Il This publication grants a deep look into that interesting border area of We macht Panzer history. The books divided into the various Units that served there, not usu- ally Panzer Divisions as such but often independent Panzer com panies and battalions. Some of the photos have been seen be fore but are here reproduced in superb quality. Most of the 137 mages are, however, new and the book contains some real gems from private collections as well as images taken by the propaganda company soldiers. ‘There are some very rare im- ages of P-40s belonging to the SS ‘Karstjager' division, as well as some extremely interesting images of Panzer IVs and Pan- zer Il Aust Js from SS Polizei Regiment 14. For fans of Ger- ‘man armour this volume fills a {gap and provides, in affordable form, some wonderful model- ling ‘inspiration. Superb and highly recommended. David Grummitt Eri Title: Miltifahrzeug 22013 Publisher: Tankograd Price: £1399(pb) ‘The current issue of Tankograd’s military vehicles magazine has ‘the usual mixture of subjects: a look at the Bundeswehrs new five-ton truck, ‘Hauber’ a ‘tour of Oslo's military museum; Finnish Leopard 2s on exer- cise in the forest; 2 look at the Bussing-NAG Type 650 in Wehr- macht service; the US. military police and their vehicles; a look at the British Army's Warthog in its current configuration; the Bundeswehr’s _Panzergrena- dierbatallion 122, the Faun ‘Autokran 13t glw LK 12/21-400 and the history oftheir tank bat- tallons in the 1980s; and, finally, 2 look at Bovington’s Tiger | at last year’s Tankfest. Maintenance (Tankogredin Detail) ‘Author: Jochenvollet Publisher: Tankograd ISBN: 978-3-93651-934-1 Price: £1999(pb) Introduced in the middle of the Cold War, the Leopard 2 main battle tanks became the suc cessor of the Leopard 1 MBT in 1979, From the day of its intro- duction the Leopard 2's design turned out to be the milestone of post-war German tank tech nology. The past years and decades has seen a fair number of publications covering the Leopard 2s development. These are more or less detailed illus- trating the various production batches. The background of this present book is therefore not to tell a well-known story all over again, but to focus on a particu- lar aspect and highlight it to a hitherto unknown degree of de- tall:maintenanceand repair. The pictorial walkaround aims at showing the tankis variousstag- ‘es of disassembly as carried out in the using units on company ‘and battalion level. Among the procedures shown are track re- moval, removing the turret and the engine or dismantling the add-on armour components. The book details areas of the tank not usually accessible to the public but which hightlight certain design aspects of the tank that mightbe interesting to enthusiasts and modellers not available in other sources. Train- ing system, storage facilites, the ‘maintenance halls and the tools necessary to maintain these ‘machines are also investigated, This is indeed a rare opportunity to seea stripped down Leopard 2 and will prove invaluable for ‘modellers who really want to superdetail the range of Leop- ard 2 kits on the market, or who want to tackle @ workshop vignette. One of the interest- ing things is the amount of rust even on a well-maintained mod- tem vehicle like the one here. A really superb publication that exemplifies Tankograd’s high production values. David Grummitt Title: TankAntVolume t: \WaWIlGerman Armour ‘Author: Michael Rinaldi Publisher: Rinaldi StudioPress ISBN: 978-0-98833-631-5 Price: £1999(00) Modelling ‘how to’ books, con- centrating on the painting and weathering process, are all the rage now and this one is bound. to be popular for two reasons: first, takes as its subject World War Il German armour and, sec- ‘ond, its by Michael Rinaldi, one of the world’s best modellers and pioneer of several of the techniques that are used today. Mike takes us through some Of the ‘basics’ of his approach to painting armour: products and materials, weathering principles, ‘the hairspray tecn- hique’ and ‘ol paint rendering. He then illustrates these tech- riques in the several projects: 2 1/35 Befehis Panther Ausf. G; 2 1/35 Tiger | Initial Production; 2 1/48 Jagdpanzer 38(0; a 1/48 Sd.kfz. 251/22 Pakwagen; and 1/35 Panzer IV Ausf. E DAK. The models are superb, the text informative and the lay out is Innovative yet easy to follow. ‘The quality of the photography is also first rate. All that said, much of what Is contained in this volume will be familiar to those of you who have read Mikes various articles for mod- elling magazines over the last few years. His article on oll paint rendering, featuring a winter whitewashed King Tiger in fact appeared in the September 2011 issue of MMI. His Panzer IV Ausf. E was the subject of an article in Military Miniatures in Review some time ago, while ‘other models will be familiar to avid readers and surfers of the net. I guess its nice to have under one cover, and make no mistake this is an attractive vol ume, but whether you want to shell out on the £19.99 cover price will be a matter of individ ual choice. Mamounidakis Publisher: Trojan Horse ISBN: 978-9.60883-555.9 Price: €2400(pb) In 1964 the government of the Republic of Cyprus, decided to proceed with the establishment Of the National Guard in orderto defend itself from the aggres sive activities of armed Turkish Cypriots and to ensure the de- fence of the island against the threats of Turkey foran invasion, The Armored Corps that was created at the time was initially based on certain improvised armored vehicles and on old equipment that was granted by the Greek Army. These included the Marmon Herrington. Mk. VF wheeled armoured recon- naissance vehicles, that were after a while complemented by equipment of Soviet origin, such as the T-34/85 tank and BTR-152V1, which the govern- ment of Cyprus ordered. These were additionally augmented by deliveries of M24 and M47 tanks from the US, and M18 tank destroyers. These formed the order of battle of the Greek division which was deployed on the island between the period 1964-1967, In general, the National Guard was an inexperienced force which although organized along Western lines, used forthe most part obsolete equipment, which to a large extent was of Soviet origin. This disparate fot was called upon to face the Turkish armed forces that invad- ed the island in the summer of 1974, The Maron Herringtons and T-34/85s were found facing the Turkish M47 and M8, in a war of short duration that led to the occupation of 36% of the territory of the Republic of Cy- rus by Turkish invasion forces.
