Project 1: The Literacy of Humanity (My Words)

When selecting who my literacy sponsor would be for my literacy type, I reflected on

each individual who has had an influence on molding my literacy type. From an extremely young

age, I have been surrounded by music and was inspired to partake in the music world due to a

wonderful individual who I gladly call Mom. Growing up, my Mother made a constant effort

to instill in me a set of skills that correlated with her musically related talents, but at a young age

I wasnt willing to pursue music quite yet. It wasnt until around the age of eight that I finally

realized I wanted to pursue music head on and wanted to learn from the most tremendous teacher

I couldve had, my Mother. The situation that stands as the best representation of my sponsor

mentoring me in my literacy would have to be when I was eight years old struggling to teach

myself how to play the piano. Watching from afar, my Mother could sense that I was struggling

trying to teach myself how to play the piano, therefore she took initiative and began mentoring

me in a way I couldve never imagined.

Reflecting on my literacy and the exposure I had to my literacy type due to my mentors

musical background, I have come to realize how these specific components correlate to my

personal culture. In terms of personal culture, I believe that music has served as a binding force

allowing me to form relationships with extremely influential people, while enabling me to reflect

on where I came from. Not only have I developed a further appreciation for my personal culture,

but I have also come to realize how valuable this literacy type is within my life. Music has been
something that has played an extremely important role in shaping the individual that I am.

Spending endless amounts of time behind the 88 black and white keys, observing each and every

note scattered amongst the sheet music, and moving my fingers along the smooth keys are only

the slightest examples of why my literacy type is so meaningful and valuable to my life.

As I grew up, I began appreciating music and the piano more than I have ever appreciated

it before, which led to the purchase of two more pianos that can be found throughout my

household. What makes this literacy so valuable in my life is the outlets it has provided and the

enjoyment it has brought not only to myself, but to my family members as well. I believe that the

literacy type and sponsor I have selected are both a perfect fit within my current life path, as well

as a perfect representation of who I am. In terms of my literacy sponsor, she fits into my current

life in a way that has allowed me to be exposed to music, while teaching me morals and values

outside of my literacy type. On the other hand, my literacy type and the events that led to a

greater understanding of my literacy type remain in my current life path due to my lifelong

interest in music and the piano. As I continue to grow as an individual and grow within my

literacy type, the piano will continue to act as a universal binding between me and other

individuals as well as provide meaning and value behind my interest in music.
