Reflective Analysis of Portfolio Artifact

Rationale/Reflection

InTASC/NAEYC Standard: STANDARD 2. BUILDING FAMILY AND COMMUNITY

RELATIONSHIPS Candidates prepared in early childhood degree programs
understand that successful early childhood education depends upon
partnerships with childrens families and communities. They a) know about,
understand, and value the importance and complex characteristics of
childrens families and communities. They use this understanding to b) create
respectful, reciprocal relationships that support and empower families, and c)
to involve all families in their childrens development and learning.

Brief Description of Evidence: During the fall semester of 2016 in my ECED 204-
Families in Transition course, I did a Family Case Study and made a Resource Kit for the family.
First I had to get with peers to discuss scenarios about the NAEYC Code of Ethics. After proving
my ability of the code of ethics, I had to pick a family and then create a questionnaire to gather
information on the family. In order to get evidence, I meet with the family a few times to do
observations of the families interactions with each other and their day to day life. Finally, I
created a Case Study to show the background and daily life of the family. I also made a Resource
Kit to help the family out.

Analysis of What I Learned: I have learned that just because the family seems to have it
together does not mean they do not need help. Just because they do not ask for help does not
mean the do not need help. Little things like sending home ideas for quick healthy dinners or
fun thing going on in the community can really help bring a family together for Family Time.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the InTASC/NAEYC

Standard: I have shown that I can build family and community relationships by getting to
know everyone and their strengths and weaknesses, their goals, and wants and needs. By
making the Resource Kit I was able to show the family that I am there for them and I am here to
support them in anyway I can. Most of my resources show my ability to help families get
involved in the communities. They also provide the family with ideas of things they can do in
the community.
