CORRELATION OF PHILIPPINE SOILS

FOR UPDATING THE HARMONIZED

WORLD SOIL DATABASE
BACKGROUND
The Harmonized World Soil Database (HWSD) is an initiative of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) and Food and
Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to consolidate regional and national soil information for modelling purposes. Its immediate
use is in the context of the Climate Change Convention and the Kyoto Protocol for soil carbon measurements and for the Global Agro-ecological
Assessment studies. It also contributes sound scientific knowledge for planning sustainable expansion of agricultural production to achieve food
security and provides information for national and international policymakers in addressing emerging problems of land competition for food
production, bio-energy demand and threats to biodiversity.

PURPOSE BSWMs COMMITMENT

A consistent (harmonized) global As the national soil institution, BSWM signed up to support the programs of Asia Soil
coverage of important soil properties Partnership (ASP), which in turn commits to the advocacies of the FAOs Global Soil
and general classes Partnership (GSP) which adopted the HWSD as the definitive soil database.
Mainly used for global or continental- BSWM commits to deliver by June 30, 2013 a 1:1M Soil Map of the Philippines adopting the
scale modelling World Reference Base for Soil Resources (WRB) classification and conforming to the
