Lab 6.1.1.

5 - Task Manager in Windows 7 and Windows 8


Make sure you change your font color to red when answering all questions in this lab or
3 points will be deducted.

Step 1: Work in the Applications Tab of Windows Task Manager.


a. Log on to Windows as an administrator (Student Account).
b. Open a browser and a folder.
c. Click the desktop and press Ctrl-Alt-Delete > Start Task Manager > Applications tab. (In VMware, you
will need to click Ctrl-Alt-Insert or the radio button in the top right)

d. Select the open browser and then click Switch To.


e. Bring Windows Task Manager to the front of the desktop. Click New Task to open the Create New Task
window.

f. In the Open field, type Notepad and click OK.

g. Navigate back to the Windows Task Manager, select Notepad, and click End Task. BEFORE ending
the task, take a screenshot and paste it below. Make sure the VM number in the top left hand corner is in
the screenshot for full credit for the step.

Step 2: Work in the Services tab of Windows Task Manager.


a. Click the Services tab. Use the scroll bar on the right of the Services window to view all the services
listed

Step 3: Work in the Performance tab of Windows Task Manager.

Step 4: Work in the Networking tab of Windows Task Manager.


a. Click the Networking tab. After clicking the Networking tab, take a screenshot and paste it below. Make
sure the VM number in the top left hand corner is in the screenshot for full credit for the step.

Step 5: Work in the Users tab of Windows Task Manager.

Step 6: Work in the Processes tab of Windows Task Manager.


a. Click the Processes tab.

b. Check the checkbox Show processes from all users.

c. Double-click the white border around the Processes tab. This changes the view of Windows Task
Manager to compact mode.

d. Click the heading Image Name. Click Image Name again.

e. Click Memory (Private Working Set).

f. Double-click the outside border again to return to tabs mode.


g. Open a browser.
Note: Firefox is used in this lab. However, any browser will work. Just substitute your browser name
whenever you see the word Firefox.
h. Return to the Windows Task Manager. Click Image Name so the list is in alphabetical order, then locate
and select firefox.exe.

a. Right-click firefox.exe > Set Priority.

i. Set the priority to Above Normal. Then click Change priority in the Windows Task Manager warning
message. BEFORE clicking Change Priority, take a screenshot and paste it below. Make sure the VM
number in the top left hand corner is in the screenshot for full credit for the step.

Step 7: Change the fields that are displayed in the Windows Task Manager.
a. Click View > Select Columns.

b. The Select Process Page Columns window opens. Check Base Priority and click OK.

c. Expand the width of the Windows Task Manager so the Base Priority column is visible.

d. Reset Firefox.exe base priority to normal. To do this, right-click firefox.exe > Set Priority > Normal >
Change priority.
e. Click View > Select Columns. Uncheck Base Priority and click OK.

f. Close Firefox.
g. Close all open windows.
h. The next part of the lab should be done using the Windows 8 virtual machine.

Task Manager in Windows 8


Step 1: Work in the Applications tab of Task Manager.
i. Log on to Windows as an administrator (Student Account).
j. Open a browser and a folder.

k. Click Start, and type task manager. Press Enter to bring up the Task Manager utility.

Note: For Windows 8.0, bring up the charms menu and then click on the search icon. Type task manager
and press Enter to open the Task Manager utility.
l. Click Fewer details to view the list of open applications.

m. Double-click the open browser listing in Task Manager. After completing this step, take a screenshot
and paste it below. Make sure the VM number in the top left hand corner is in the screenshot for full credit
for the step.

n. Bring up Task Manager again by clicking on its icon in the task bar. Highlight the browser, and click End
task.

Step 8: Work in the Services tab of Task Manager.


a. Click More Details at the bottom-left corner of Task Manager.

Step 10: Work in the Processes tab of Task Manager.


a. Click the Processes tab.

b. Click the Memory heading. Click the Memory heading a second time.

c. Right-click on the Memory heading, and then select Resource values > Memory > Percents.

d. Open a browser.
Note: Internet Explorer is used in this lab. However, any browser will work. Just substitute your browser
name whenever you see the Internet Explorer.
e. Return to the Task Manager. Click the Name heading.
