Chapter 8 - Investigative Task

Cigarettes have always had a negative effect on people's health worldwide. The harmful

addiction is linked to several different diseases. One in particular is CHD (coronary heart

disease). CHD is a disease in the hearts major blood vessels and can easily lead to death

.Information from The American Journal of Public Health reports on the Cigarette Consumption

and deaths per year from coronary heart disease. The data revealed some interesting information

that helps determine if there is a relationship between deaths and coronary heart disease,

The average cigarette consumption of the 21 countries is 2148 per adult each year with a

standard deviation of 809 cigarettes per adult each year. The average number of deaths due to

CHD was 144.90 per 100,000 citizens and a a standard deviation of 66.53 deaths per 100,000

citizens.

The data displays a moderately strong association, slightly linear and positive between

cigarette consumption and CHD deaths . The association coefficient is r=0.731. Countries that

possess higher cigarette consumption tend to have a high death rate due to CHD. This applies to

most countries except Greece and Mexico which experienced a high cigarette consumption but a

low CHD death rate. Finland on the other hand has an unusually high death rate from CHD for

its cigarette level consumption. The points are not outliers.

The data can be modeled as a linear model because both variables are quantitative and

2
there are no outliers. R =53.4% which indicates 53.4% of variability in CHD death rate. The
regression equation is Y= 15.64+0.06(cigarettes). After analyzing, the data strongly depicts a

relationship between cigarette consumption and CHD deaths. Cutting down on cigarette

consumption can lead to fewer deaths from CHD.
