English Language Skills
All assessment must be carried out in English.

For the Foundation Level Training Certificate Candidates should have a basic ability
to communicate and exchange basic information in a simple way. They should be able
to use and understand familiar everyday expressions and basic phrases and recognise
simple routine words in a workshop context. This level of English is equivalent to the
following International Frameworks - CEFR A1-A2 /IELTs 3.0.

For the Level 1 Training Certificate Candidates should be able to deal with simple,
straightforward information and to express ideas in familiar contexts. They should be
able to understand sentences and frequently used expressions relevant to the
workplace. They should be able to communicate with others about routine tasks
involving a simple and direct exchange of information. This level of English is
equivalent to the following International Frameworks - CEFR B1/IELTs 4.0.

For the Level 2 Training Certificate Candidates should have the ability to express
themselves in a limited way in familiar situations and to deal in a general way with new
or non-routine information. They should be able to understand the main points of
inputs on familiar matters regularly encountered in the workplace. They should also
have the ability to produce simple written and spoken responses on topics that are
familiar. This level of English is equivalent to the following International Frameworks -
CEFR B1-B2/IELTs 4.0 5.0/ ToEFL c 30 45.

Guidance on Learning, Teaching and Assessment Methods

Teaching and training material/exercises should include examples which reflect worksite
operational requirements, procedures and paperwork wherever possible, for example:
operating procedures for plant operations
local plant and industry examples of safety procedures and paperwork for permit to
work systems, risk assessments and isolations
local plant and industry examples of P&IDs, schematics, process flow diagrams and
isometric drawings
templates and completed examples for readings sheets, handover sheets and
toolbox talks.

Typical learning steps will involve demonstration, practice exercises and then
assessment.

Training Standards can be delivered and assessed in an integrated way. This is

particularly relevant for the Oil and Gas Processing Operations Techniques and Oil and
Gas Processing Operations Practice Training Standards. The Techniques standards
provide the knowledge of processing operations and the Practice standards assess
practical implementation of processing operations.

Candidates should maintain a Log (Log Book/Operator Log/Activity Record) to record

details of processing operations they have carried out this will provide evidence of
Candidates understanding of the techniques and practices involved and will form part
of the assessment process for some Training Standards.

Version 2 July 2015 13

Safety legislation and guidelines should be relevant to the location where training and
assessment is taking place. In the UK for example the following would be applicable
Health and Safety at Work Act; RIDDOR Reporting of Injuries and Dangerous
Occurrences Regulations; MSDS Material Safety Data Sheets; CHIP Chemical Hazard
Information Regulations; COSHH Control of Substances Hazardous to Health.
Practical Assessments
When Candidates are being assessed for the following practical standards, they should
be assessed in the role of both plant operator and control room operator to ensure that
they understand all aspects of oil and gas processing operations. The checklist below
provides typical examples of the roles.

Level 1: Basic Oil and Gas Processing Operations Practice

Level 2: Oil and Gas Processing Operations Practice (Wellheads); (Oil Pumps);
