WHY DID THE USA ENTER THE VIETNAM WAR
The U.S. government viewed its involvement in the war as a
way to prevent a Communist takeover of South Vietnam.
This was part of a wider containment policy, with the stated
aim of stopping the spread of communism.
EXPLAIN THE GULF OF TONKIN INCIDENT
Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, resolution put before the U.S.
congress by President Lyndon Johnson on August 5th 1964,
assertedly in reaction to two allegedly unprovoked attacks by
North Vietnamese torpedo boats on the destroyers Maddox
and C.
It's stated purpose was to approve and support the
determination of the president, as commander in chief, in
taking all necessary measures to repel any armed attacks
against the forces of the United States and to prevent any
further aggression.
HOW DID THE WAR BEGIN?
The North Vietnamese government and the Viet Cong were
fighting to reunify Vietnam. They viewed the conflict as a
colonial war and a continuation of the First Indochina War
against forces from France and later on the U.S.Regular U.S.
combat units were deployed beginning in 1965.
WHAT PROBLEMS DID THE USA ENCOUNTER
The desire to combat communism and show that the US
would not let small far away countries be overwhelmed.
The small far away countries did not want to be communism
but were not really prepared to fight - though happy for
others to fight on their behalf.
The war was expensive and increasingly unpopular and
unwinable.
Massive firepower and technology could not defeat a
determined enemy in jungle warfare without the help of the
population.
EXPLAIN THE TET OFFENSIVE
The tet oensive was one of the largest military campaigns of
the Vietnam War, launched on January 30th 1968, by forces of
the viet cong and north Vietnamese People's Army of
Vietnam against the forces of the South Vietnamese Army of
the Republic of Vietnam, the United States, and their allies. It
was a campaign of surprise attacks against military and
civilian command and control centers throughout South
Vietnam. The name of the oensive comes from the TET
holiday, the Vietnamese New Year, when the first major
attacks took place.
HOW DID THE USA WITH DRAW
Because the American public concluded they could not win
the war. This really happened after the Tet Oensive
(launched on Jan 30, 1968) by the Viet Cong and the North
Vietnamese Army. Peace agreements end wars. In the
agreement, both sides agreed to exchange POWs and to
withdrawal their forces from South Vietnam.
WAS THE WAR SUCCESSFUL, WHO WON?
The Vietnam war was successful for the North Vietnamese,
it was a failure for the south Vietnam.
NAME 3 EFFECTS OF THE WAR

Took away more then 2 million lives.
3 million where wounded, hundred of thousands of children
where left orphans and the war ruined both north and south
