JIL: (voice over after 12 secs) ...yup, Ill be covering the origin of Christmas!
JIL: Im sure yall know what Christmas is right? Its a festival celebrated by
Christians all over the world to commemorate the birth of Jesus. However,
you dont have to be religious to celebrate this holiday! Many people
celebrate Christmas for the rich culture it holds. So, what is this holiday all
about? For Christians its about the birth of their saviour Jesus, in a
manger 2,000 years ago. They celebrate Gods love in sending his son to
save them. However, for others they celebrate it for
JIL: Santa Claus is based off the Greek Bishop Saint Nicholas, who lived in
Myra during the third and fourth centuries. He is well-known as a patron of
children as well as a magical gift-bringer. One of his best known stories is
of him saving three poor sisters from slavery by providing them with a
dowry so that they could be married. The Santa Claus we know however,
looks nothing like the actual saint!
JIL: His current image is based off a poem by Clement Moore in 1822 and was
shaped by the political cartoonist Thomas Nast in 1881. Thomas cartoon
depicted Santa Claus as a round, cheerful man with a full, white beard,
carrying a sack filled with toys for good children to celebrate the spirit of
joy and giving to others. And thats how the Santa Claus we have today
came about!
JIL: Well, even if you dont believe in any of these, you can still celebrate
Christmas for the spirit of giving! This joyous occasion is meant for us to
bring happiness to others around us through gifts. Well, thats all the time
we have for this segment, thank you for tuning in to me Jilliane, on Season
Greetings! Youre listening to Radio Heatwave the hottest thing on
