Professor Research

Leonard Adelman is professor of Systems Engineering and Operations Research at George

Mason Universitys Data Analytics and Engineering department [1]. He begin his

undergraduate university education at Florida State University in 1971 [1]. He has done his

masters degree in Computer Science at University of Colorado in 1973 [1]. Dr. Adelman

pursued his PhD, Psychology at University of Colorado, Boulder in 1976 [1].

Dr. Adelman research interests mainly focuses on Judgment and decision processes, decision

support systems, human-computer interaction, and system evaluation [1]. He published his

articles and wrote books on Decision Support Systems, Human-Centered Design, Evaluation.

Leonards concentration was to achieve system goals, for which humans and technologies work

together. His contributions are towards Cognitive engineering, which is a developing branch of

ergonomics, which is a subject that brings awareness in various information selection process,

understanding how to choose the right information, planning, correctness, workload in areas

like engineering and businesses. His regards this study because its major topic that he is

working on and this subject relates much to his research and lectures.
He researched on decision process and understanding how to judge in various analytics

and systems [1]. He has explained from his writings, and articles how peoples decisions

depends on the planning and structuring the modeling, and he also explain, how people

end up choosing dis-confirmatory information, which further leads to confusion in the

information gathered [1]. His research mainly is a concept to eliminate the inaccurate

data, information and decision making. This work is a great contribution to the Data

Analytics field because, the field overall depends on how the data should be filtered in

order to achieve the important data and remove unwanted information.

In the year 2013 he published an article [1] Does the cognitive engineering effort do what

it was envisioned to do?. . In the year 2008 Testing information order effects in a long series

of evidence. These publications are his discussions on weather cognitive engineering has effect

in real world processors? He also has been involved in [1] evaluating geospatial-tool

prototypes developed by the Army to support tactical planning, and possible human-computer

interface changes to the Armys Patriot air defense system and the Air Forces Airborne Warning

and Control System (AWACS). All these researches show his involvement in decision making

interests.

He worked towards robust framing, designing the prototypes of the systems, he trained to

develop procedures, in choosing the right information within huge amount of information. His

article Using inferred probabilities to measure the accuracy of imprecise forecasts. Judgment

and Decision Making emphasizes his works. This is the main concept in today Big Data,

Many organizations develop huge data sets and huge amount of unwanted and useful information

is developed by call centers, business, social media, etc. Hence this Judgment and Decision

Making is important because over all idea of big data and Data Analytics is to judge and decide
on selecting the data which is important in order to manage data and process it. This concept is

most prominent topic and it apples in all the projects and data based researches as well as

application processes in Data Analytics field.

In addition to publishing journal and conference papers and book chapters, Dr. Adelman has

co-authored one book on cognitive systems engineering, and authored one book and co-authored

another on evaluating decision support and knowledge-based systems [1]. He authored books

such as, Evaluating Decision Support and Expert Systems. New York: Wiley; Adelman, L., &

Riedel, S.L (1997). Handbook for Evaluating Knowledge-Based Systems: Conceptual

Framework and Compendium of Methods. Norwell, MA: Kluwer Academic [1].

Dr. Adelman is member and professor at System Engineering & Operation Research [1].

His contributions towards decision support and knowledge-based systems, and various other

cognitive engineering researches have brought him professional Awards [1]. He was elected

senior member of IEEE. His Research grants: U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research, U.

S. Army Research Institute, and National Science Foundation [1].
