In the Arms of the Angles

Life can only be understood backward, but it must be lived forward.

Soren Kierkegaard

The twelve Houses of the birth chart symbolize the realms of human endeavor and experience.
In ancient times they were regarded as mansions of the planetary gods and referred to simply as
places. As the planets crossed the sky: rising, culminating and finally setting into the underworld,
people became aware of the daily flow of change.

Winter Autumn
Yang Yin
IC Nadir
Spring Quadrant: Since this quadrant is in the Eastern Hemisphere where the diurnal energy ascends and in the vis-
ible realm it has a double Yang essence. A concentration of classical planets in the upper left quadrant indicates a focus on:

Self-actualization through social expression and integration.

Self-development in the service of the culture becomes a life-theme.
Natural star players and Leaders seeking objective recognition.
Individual charisma and strong independence drive personal goals achieved through societal contribution.

Summer Quadrant: Since this quadrant is in the Western Hemisphere where the diurnal energy is beginning to
decline but still in the visible realm it has a mixed Yang/Yin essence. A concentration of classical planets in the upper right
quadrant indicates a focus on:

Cooperation through social expression and significance.

Collaborative ventures in the service of culture becomes a life-theme.
Ultimate team players and Investors seeking objective recognition.
Interpersonal diplomacy and interdependence drive communal goals that lead to collective achievements.

Autumn Quadrant: Since this quadrant is in the Western Hemisphere where the diurnal energy is in decline and in
the invisible realm, it has a double Yin essence. A concentration of classical planets in the lower right quadrant indicates a
focus on:

Cooperation through private expression and analysis.

Collaborative activities in the service of families and/or inner circles becomes a life theme.
Masters of adaptation and Emissaries seeking subjective introspection.
Interpersonal alliances and interdependence drive deep personal expression and fulfillment.

Winter Quadrant: Since this quadrant is in the Eastern Hemisphere where the diurnal energy is beginning to rise
again but still in the invisible realm, it has a mixed Yin/Yang essence. A concentration of classical planets in the lower left
quadrant indicates a focus on:

Self-actualization through private expression and exchange.

Self-development in the service of family and/or a close inner circle becomes a life-theme.
Masters of self-reliance and Lone Wolves seeking subjective introspection.
Individual charisma and independence drive deep personal expression and fulfillment.

Vacant Quadrants: When there is an empty Quadrant containing no planets, there tends to be a lack of evolutionary
development in the instinctual and experiential affairs of the Houses involved. For example, if a person has no planets in
the Autumn Quadrant, there may be a deficiency in the affairs related to Roots, Productivity and Discernment along with the
corresponding experiences of having a family, raising children and employing skills. By consciously focusing on growing
in these areas, a person can develop a holistic synthesis of character and life expression.
Chart Patterns - Vision (Constitution)

Seesaw: This pattern features two distinct groups of planets on opposite sides of the
chart stressing a balanced approach to life. Individuals born with this hourglass pattern
are innately attuned to the Courageous-Grace archetypal polarity exemplified by Aries-
Libra axis. On the Shadow side it is expressed as indecisiveness and being pulled in two
powerful directions. In the integrated psyche it grants judicious wisdom, diplomacy, and
the expression of unique talents requiring the harmonization of extremes.

Bundle: This pattern includes all seven classical planets squeezed into an area spanning
three or four signs indicating extreme focus in the Houses occupied. Individuals born with
this pattern are innately attuned to the Serene-Transformation archetypal polarity exem-
plified by Taurus-Scorpio axis. On the Shadow side it is expressed as obsessiveness and
stubbornness laced with narrow vision. In the integrated psyche it grants physical prow-
ess and inner strength and endurance that can lead to the development of a unique ability.

Splash: This pattern has the planets dispersed evenly around the chart, granting the in-
dividual an adaptable nature with a variety of interests. Individuals born with this pattern
are innately attuned to the Spontaneous-Inspiration archetypal polarity exemplified by
Sagittarius-Gemini axis. In addition to a universal approach to life, the individual tends
to scatter his or her energies in many directions. This lack of concentration can interfere
with solid accomplishment but may also lead to a jack-of-all-trades chameleon character
with many diverse talents.

Bowl: This pattern features the planets occupying one hemisphere of the chart. It has
also been called the Locomotive pattern with the lead ascending planet indicating the na-
ture of the individuals trustworthy charisma. These people are extremely self-motivated
with endless reserves of energy used to accomplish their goals. Individuals born with this
pattern are innately attuned to the Hearth-Wisdom archetypal polarity exemplified by
Cancer-Capricorn axis, able to take responsibility in family and professional situations.

Splay: This pattern features two or three planets banned together at various points
around the chart, often including an aspect configuration. Individuals born with this pat-
tern are innately attuned to the Creative-Communion archetypal polarity exemplified by
Leo-Aquarius axis. These individuals tend to be revolutionaries ahead of their time with
unique interests and agendas. They are often loners who can be disruptive if pressed into
conformity. They excel at experimentation and need to play in order to develop their
unique nonconformist genius.

Bucket: This pattern, often called a funnel, is like the Bowl but with a singleton planet
across from the crowded side acting as the handle of the bucket. Individuals born with
this pattern are innately attuned to the Spiritual-Devotion archetypal polarity exemplified
by Virgo-Pisces axis. They excel at chopping wood and carrying water in the develop-
ment and exercise of the special devotion or craft theyve discovered, symbolized by the
handle-planet. They can be weighed down by activities in the Houses with planets op-
posite the handle and usually spend most their lives occupied with those areas, always
longing to get back to their unique talent or specialty.
When looking for Chart Patterns, the hourglass-shaped Seesaw stretched through oppositions or quin-
cunxes is easily spotted as is the Bundle concentrated into three or four Signs. The Splash is readily
identified by the fact that the classical planets are spread out into six or seven Signs and appears like an
artist splashed paint on the canvas of the chart. The Bowl is contained on one chart hemisphere spread
over and area of five to seven Signs, while the Bucket is just a Bowl with a singleton planet across the
chart occupying an entire hemisphere alone. Sometimes the bottom of the Bucket will be highly concen-
trated like a Bundle, while other times it will be spread out like a Bowl, and the persons character will
reflect this mixture. The Splay is easy to see when there is a planetary configuration like a Grand Trine
or T-Cross present. When the chart does not fit any of the other types and there are tight groupings of
planet pairs, then the Splay is the obvious last choice. Due to its very nature (Creative-Communion), the
maverick Splay seeks to establish a pattern that is not easily pigeonholed. But if the astrologer simply
goes through the first five and does not find a fit, then it is a Splay.

A planet is called the Significator of the affairs and experiential themes

of any House whose cusp cuts through its sign. It symbolizes the Houses
experiential themes and forms an archetypal image-bridge from the House
it occupies back to the House(s) it governs.
When a classical planet occupies a sign other than the sign it is associated with, then it must answer to the planet
that does guide that sign. This is called Dispositorship. Only the seven classical planets as sign transmitters
have the Dispositorship power to channel archetypal energy through consciousness.

The planet that guides a given sign acts as the Dispositor of any planets occupying that sign. The word dis-
positor comes from the Latin root disponere, which means to take energy from one place and channel it into
another. The dispositor harnesses the archetypal energy of planets (and other forces like Outer Planets) in its
sign or signs and channels that energy into the House it occupies. In this way, there are invisible paths of energy
flowing through the chart that one can trace through following the pathways of Dispositorship. I call this process
archetypal image-bridging.

When two planets disposit each other by occupying one anothers dignity signs, this is called Mutual Re-
ception. The ancients referred to this as an exchange of signs. It is as if they are forming a supportive trade
agreement with each other. It indicates that they as a pair do not answer to any other planets and have strength in
the individuals character through their dynamic relationship. These two planets, the Houses they guide, and any
other classical planets (or forces/mathematical points) they Disposit form an intricate and powerful psychic col-
lective within the individual. They act as their own little consortium of power and can establish the souls agenda.
When a planet occupies its own Sign and every other classical planet ends up reporting back to it through the
Dispositorship pathways, then it is called the Final Dispositor, and becomes a major force within the
psyche of the individual, setting the inner agenda according to its archetypal nature. When there is a Mutual Re-
ception, there can be no Final Dispositor.
A third Dispositorship situation occurs when planets keep cycling around the chart so that the archetypal agenda
continues to change through a string of 3-7 planets. The energy does not settle into either a Final Dispositor or
a Mutual Reception. This is called a Dispositor Chain, and it acts to keep the inner government of the
psyche flexible and changing. The most common situation is where there are three planets channeling archetypal
energy through a triangular pattern. The most rare form of Dispositorship Chain is when the power cycles through
all 7 planets without settling into either a Mutual Reception or a Final Dispositor.
Sometimes there is one archetypal conglomerate and a radical planet or group of planets operating in the psychic
life of an individual at the same time. The archetypal vibration and mythic resonance of these divided groups can
be traced through studying the relationships of the planets through following the Dispositorship trail. The three
basic situations outlined above appear to mix in one of three ways. A chart might have a Mutual Reception with
either another planet in its Dignity Sign or multiple Mutual Receptions. This is called a Split Dispositor-
ship. Then another chart might have everything reporting to two or more different Dignified planets. This
situation is called Multiple Dignitaries. Finally, a chart might display a Dispositor Chain working
simultaneously with a Mutual Reception, a strong Dignified planet, or Multiple Dignitaries. This is called a
Mixed Chain.
These six archetypal dynamics establish unique styles of inner organization within the psyche of the individual
that correspond to the Archetypal Fields much like the Chart Patterns already discussed. In fact, taken together,
the Chart Pattern and the Dispositorship Pattern work together in the organization of the individuals conscious-
ness. The Dispositor situation indicates the core of power in the chart and the planets involved set the main
agenda of the psyche based on their Signs, Houses, and Aspect. Together they form the Faction in Action or Yang
part of consciousness. The other planets not involved in the Dispositorship Pattern form the Faction in Reaction
or Yin aspect of consciousness, working to support or oppose the main agenda, depending on the situation. The
core Chart Pattern acts as a set of guidelines much like a constitution and shows how the inner psychic factions
will approach the core agenda set forth by the Faction in Action.
The Mutual Reception Pattern is attuned to the Courageous-Grace archetypal polarity and simulates
a Republic-style government. In Republics a small segment of the population wields the power and
sets the agenda, but there is still a division between the Senate and the Leader. The planet with the
most Dignity in the chart becomes the Leader while the other planet in the Mutual Reception acts as the
legislature. Together they work to harness the resources and archetypal powers of the remaining five
planets in a cooperative union of power. Like the Seesaw Chart Patterns Shadow side, it is expressed as
indecisiveness and being pulled in two powerful directions. In the integrated psyche it grants judicious
wisdom, diplomacy, and the expression of unique talents requiring the harmonization of extremes.

In any Dispositorship Pattern, if a planet governing one of the angles is not a member of the Faction in
Action, then the individual faces acute struggles in meeting the developmental needs of the given An-
gular House and the Succeedent and Cadent Houses that follow. This is particularly difficult when this
outlaw planet is the governor of the Ascendant because the individual experiences a level of power-
lessness and a struggle to be a self. The planet governing the Rising Sign is supposed to be in charge of
focalizing and orchestrating the collective psychic and archetypal energy, and yet finds itself enslaved to
the agenda set forth by the Faction in Action. If the given planet governs the Descendant and thus rela-
tionships, the individual will experience a sense of powerlessness and struggle through intimacy as the
planets needs are wedded to the core agenda. Relationships that support that will prosper and those that
do not will tend to fail or be filled with an inordinate amount of struggle. If the outlaw planet governs
the Midheaven, the struggles are focused into ones life calling and reputation in society. If it governs
the Nadir, then the family life and emotional foundations will be a source of despair. In either case, the
individual has to consciously realize a way of uniting these disparate energies.

The Final Dispositorship Pattern is attuned to the Serene-Transformation archetypal polarity and simu-
lates a Monarchy-style government. In a Monarchy one sovereign King or Queen wields the power and
sets the agenda, acting as the de facto Leader. The planet generally has the most Dignity and works to
harness the resources and archetypal powers of the remaining six planets and other forces to support its
core agenda by Sign, House, and Aspects. Like the Bundle Chart Patterns Shadow side, it is expressed
as obsessiveness and stubbornness laced with narrow vision. In the integrated psyche it grants physical
prowess, inner strength and endurance an the possibility of a unique ability.

The Dispositor Chain Pattern is attuned to the Spontaneous-Inspiration archetypal polarity and simu-
lates a Council-style government where each member of the pattern gets a voice and a vote on the core
agenda of the soul. In a communal or tribal Council one person will facilitate the energies of the group.
The planet with the most Dignity in the chart becomes the Voice of the Council while the other planets in
the chain act as the legislature. The planets that wield the power will tend to set the agenda based on their
interests, but are also open to the needs and archetypal desires of the Faction in Reaction. Together, both
Factions work to harness the resources and archetypal powers of the whole chart in the most cooperative
union of power possible. Like the Splash Chart Pattern, there is a marked universal approach to life, even
though the individual tends to scatter energy in many directions. This lack of concentration and focus
can interfere with solid accomplishment but may also lead to a jack-of-all-trades chameleon character.

The Split Dispositorship Pattern is attuned to the Hearth-Wisdom archetypal polarity and simulates a
Democracy-style government where power is divided to benefit the majority. In Democracies a large
segment of the population wields the power and sets the agenda, but there is still a division between the
People and their elected Leader. The planets with the most Dignity in both the Mutual Reception and the
strong Dignified Planet (or additional Mutual Reception) tend to take turns Leading while the other plan-
ets in the extensive Faction in Action act as the legislature. Together they work to harness the resources
and archetypal powers of the remaining rebel minority planets in either a cooperative or antagonistic flow
of power. Like the Bowl chart Pattern, these people are extremely self-motivated with endless reserves
of energy used to accomplish lofty goals. Individuals born with this pattern are ministerial and used to
taking responsibility in both family and professional situations, either thriving or crumbling under the
pressure to succeed. The Cancerian side of the arrangement (usually the Mutual Reception) acts to set
as the private and familial agenda while the strong Dignified planet works to climb the highest mountain
in sight and establishes the Capricornian agenda. The situation changes drastically when there are two
or more Mutual Receptions in the chart, as each one comprises a unique set of needs and agendas that
are equally important. One of the Mutual Receptions will still dominate and become the Leading group.

The Multiple Dignitaries Pattern is attuned to the Creative Communion archetypal polarity and simu-
lates a Meritocracy-style government. In Meritocracies individuals are given power according to their
merits or value to the collective. When there are Multiple Dignified planets (and no Final Dispositor)
each one establishes its own power based on its unique archetypal situation and attempts to set the core
soul agenda accordingly. However, the power is divided between other Dignified planets, and together
they forge the agenda as the Faction in Action. In some people there might be three or four planets in
Dignity Signs setting the agenda and directing the energies of the other planets. The Dignified planet
with the most Dignity in the chart becomes the Leader while the other Dignified planets seek to push their
agendas when they come to power in the psyche during certain season of the soul under powerful transits
and progressions. Together they work to harness the resources and archetypal powers of the remaining
follower planets in a stratified caste system of power based on merit. Like the Splay Chart Pattern, these
individuals tend to be revolutionaries ahead of their time with unique interests and diverse agendas. They
are often loners who can be disruptive if pressed into conformity. They excel at experimentation and
need to play in order to develop their unique genius.

The Mixed Chain Pattern is attuned to the Spiritual-Devotion archetypal polarity and simulates a Fed-
eration-style government. In Federations a league of city-states work together to set the cultural agenda,
each governed by their own Leader. Often they will get into severe conflicts with each other going to
war, but together they present a unified front of power against foreign nations or barbarian tribes. The
core Chain will present a balanced agenda taking in the needs of the Faction in Reaction, while the strong
Dignified planet or Mutual Reception will work against it with a different archetypal agenda creating a
dynamic tension. The planet with the most Dignity in one of the power groups becomes the Leader while
the planets in the other group or groups will continually vie for power. The situation becomes extremely
tense
. and feudal when there is a Chain combined with both a Mutual Reception and a strong Dignified
planet. Like the Bucket Chart Pattern, these individuals excel at laboring toward the development and
exercise of the special devotion or craft theyve discovered, symbolized in this case by strong Dignified
planet or Mutual Reception group. They can be weighed down by activities of the Chain and usually
spend most their lives occupied by those interests, but they constantly long to get back to their unique
specialty.

Experiential Fields (Houses)
Take your well-disciplined strengths and stretch them between two opposing poles. Because inside human be-
ings is where God learns.

Maria Rainer Rilke

The character or condition of a house as a symbol of a dynamic field of life experience is ascertained by three primary
factors: Zodiac sign on the cusp, classical planetary guide of that sign, and any planets occupying the house. Houses
express their experiential themes through all five dimensions: Spiritual, Archetypal, Emotional, Intellectual, and Physical.
The Spiritual and Archetypal expressions are best interpreted from the uncarved Zodiac of the Whole Sign houses. Houses
begin with the sign that the cusp cuts through and they evolve into the next sign. An individual will initiate affairs of a
house through the first signs typical expression range and then shift to the next sign at crucial turning points or evolutions
followed by a steady oscillation between the two signs.

Once the soul, as a living expression of the stream of archetypal consciousness fused with the elements of this
world, is embodied in form, it takes on the heavenly configuration of the moment of the first breath from the
vantage point of the birth location. Twelve distinct energy fields are created symbolizing life experience, each
expressing a unique state of being and human instinctual functioning.
