Article Analysis
The name of the current article is A Study of Big Data Characteristics which is from the
on 30 March 2017, from volume and it was published in Communication and Electronics
Systems (ICCES). The authors of the article are Gayatri Kapil, Alka Agrawal, R. A. Khan they
are all from Information technology department at the university of, Babasaheb Bhimrao
The current article is not a IMRD structure because its a complete theoretical analysis on
big data and its characteristics. The object of the study is the challenges caused due to the
evolution of big data which lead to discovery of new characteristics of Big Data [1]. The
purpose of the study is to resolve the data mining issues by discovering new characteristics of
data, these characteristics will provide simple and effective management of big data that will be
useful in the applications and research environment [1]. Also the exigence is very clearly stated
through out the article. Even though many scientists and professors have defined and identified
the characteristics of big data, the challenge is those technologies and databases are still not
enough to handle the growing data, the huge data sets that are currently growing could be
handled only through understanding it in-depth and determining more characteristics in order to
remove the unwanted data that is being generated [1]. The relevance of this article is the three
proposed characteristics, which are very useful in order to develop techniques to solve massive
data sets manage data. The existing characteristics are not sufficient, hence research will help
This article is the increasing emphasis on discovering new characteristics of Big Data [1]. The
article defines Big data as the collection of data sets, the concept of big data is found in the
digital communication and information technology [1]. The emerging growth of big data has
concerned for the need to explore more in the big data in order to manage, curate and handle it
[1]. The overall article mentions the need to recognize the new ways to solve more and more
Article consist of five sections, First section is introduction, followed by Indemnity of Big
Data characteristics, Third sections is Need for more exploration of Big Data, Fourth
section is Research work in Big Data characteristics, and finally conclusion [1].
The introduction is a package of all the moves mentioned in the book Academic Writing
For Graduate Students [2]. Introduction section is two paragraphs, First paragraph is of 8
sentences, it introduces big data and its applications [1]. The second paragraph is of 9
sentences and it gives examples on the evolving problems and why it should be immediately
handled.
The article clearly Mentions the move 1 [2] by stating the challenges, big data is too fast, too
hard, too big to handle for the existing databases [1]. [2] The author introduced and reviewed
the previous researches in the area by mentioning that five years ago, personal computer storage
was tens to hundreds of gigabytes [1]. [1]Today IDC's Digital Universe Study predicts that
between 2009 and 2020 digital information data will grow by 44% from 0.8 ZB to 35 ZB. This
The Move 2 Niche [2] could be clearly inferred from the introduction as the author
mentions that data is increasing day by day and that fast increasing data could be only handled
has all the points in Move 3, purpose of the article, author stated the principle findings, author
stated the value of the research and indicated the structure of the research paper [2]. The first
point purpose can be understood by reading the first 3 lines in the introduction it mentions where
the big data is used and found and why it should be a reason for research. The value of the
research is mentioned in the last four sentences in the paragraph one, by mentioning how the
massive data is collected from organizations and how that data needs to be handled in order to
achieve success [1]. Also that big data is moving target and many different solutions can be
The second section consists of definitions based on the characteristics of big data, which are
defined by individuals, organizations, data researches, all these characteristics are useful in
order to manage data effectively. In the third section, tools and the techniques that have been
used to resolve the issues of big data mining have been discussed, it also addresses that
techniques such as RDBMS, and existing data mining techniques are insufficient for handling
the big data [1], need for developing more techniques have been mentioned [1]. Also need to
identify more characteristics in order to handle the data is mentioned. In section four, the
characteristics identified through research from the theory of big data are discussed [1]. These
characteristics are named after big data features, Verbosity, Versatility, Voluntariness, this
article has identified and defined them. These names are given based on the features of big data,
these could be used in various real world applications like organizations, urban planning by
issues to optimize their productivity and to improve the equipment and customers performance,
energy companies to meet out energy demands during peak time and consequently increase
production and improving efficiency by reducing the losses, health care professionals to prevent
diseases and improving patient health [1], research organizations to obtain quality of research
and revolutionize life science, physical science, medical science and scientific research [1],
financial service organizations to identify and prevent fraud, government agencies to improve
This article proposed three characteristics, these characteristics could be considered as the new
features by the Data Analytics department in order to develop new projects as well as to develop
new applications and resolving data mining issues in the big data, as one of the feature discusses
about finding the method to remove unwanted data initially and then allocate space for the
important information [1]. The feature Voluntariness is most effective use in Data Analytics
department because new features and applications services are developed by the department.
Hence the versatile nature of big data is important in order to use it according to the context in
applications
These are the visual informative images in which the data flow and the characteristics of the big
data are given in tabular form. The hole article discusses the characteristics but in the table the
features of each characteristics are defined and shortlisted. Which is easy to understand for
users.
This graph depicts the methods that have been adopted at different stages of time.
Through this the growth of the data and advancements in the technologies could be
depicted.
This article is a research study of big data and its characteristics, it gives a review of how the
data has grown since the past few year and techniques as RDBMS and other languages used for
the data to be handled and its an overall literature review of the characteristics of big data [1].
The article briefs that the existing characteristics identified V's i.e. Volume, Variety, Velocity,
Veracity, Validity, Value, Variability, Venue, Vocabulary, Vagueness are not sufficient to manage
the big data, the hole big data revolves around these characteristics but still there is a scope for
research [1].
This article is useful for students and Data Analytics department to understand that data is huge
and there is always a scope for new development. At the same time articles research in the past
changes in big data, explains why its important to take an initiative to remove unwanted data in
order to manage the data. This article definitely is a future scope for developers since it covered
all the important aspects of big data and gave all the defined theories from researches scientist.
