Frida Kahlo, Hispanic/Mexican painter (1907-1954)
Frida Kahlo was well known for her brutally honest self portrait paintings that provided
information about her physical, emotional and psychological state.
1. Site your source! This means you need to know the photographers name and
include the URL of where you found the image. This information must be
included in the rubric section provided.
2. Only use the photo as 40% or less of your overall design.
3. Not use this final design in any art shows or competitions.
4. Use a good source. Find quality photography instead of clip art/Google image
search results.
Technical Requirements
You must use the following tools/techniques in your self-portrait:
Steps to Take:
1. Make a brainstorming web to explore a few categories of your life. Include lists
and sketches.
2. Create 3 thumbnail sketches that merge your face with some of those listed
ideas.
3. Take a series of self-portrait photos try different angles so you have some
options to work with.
4. Take any other photos or create any other drawings that you want to use in your
design.
5. Upload all images to your student space.
6. You will use all of your mad artistic skills to make your two (or more) self-portraits
into a cohesive design that tells the viewer something about yourself.

Objective: Students will observe, report out, and gather emotions represented in images.
These images should express something about the artist, what they value, love, or things they
want to do in life. These images are to be organized into a collage that demonstrates the artists
understanding of the design principles of: emphasis, contrast, and repetition.
Criteria:
These images should be highly detailed, brightly colored, with distinct shapes that can be cut
away from the background. The images must be clear and readable so that you can see what
the image is, so that you can read it.
Grade standards:

have teacher approval). 10 pts.
3._____Did the student use repetition of color, shape, line, etc. to unify the parts of the collage?

parts neatly secured? 10 pts.
6._____Did the student participate in critique and complete critique questions? 10 pts.
7._____How much initiative did the student demonstrate? Did the student use
experimentation to try multiple solutions/ compositions before gluing? 10 pts.
