Fargo-Moorhead Welcoming Week is fast approaching. Our team has been working hard to find
innovative solutions to problems encountered by committee members in previous years.
Problems encountered in the past include the following:
In our work, we have taken these difficulties into account. We have applied technical
communication design principles that unite professional appeal and practical utility, as well as
kept in mind how different media/genres can impact audience reach.
Below you will find our recommendations on several deliverables that we believe present
solutions to these problems. These deliverables include prototypes for a Fargo-Moorhead
Welcoming Week:

We are grateful for the opportunity to work toward building up the efforts of Fargo-Moorhead
Welcoming Week, and we hope you find our prototypes effective solutions to committee needs.
We look forward to your response.
Sincerely,
Logo
The first design on the top has National placed above the hand and the words, while the design
on the bottom has it vertical and to the left of the hand. We wanted to include National in our
design because Fargo-Moorhead Welcoming Week is part of the larger, national movement. The
App
We recommend creating an app for this event as a way to compile memories from the event with
photos, provide an easy way of communication for everyone involved, and to perform as a
scheduling device for participants. There are a total of five screens throughout this app, each
having their own function/purpose for the event as well as benefits for the individual. The app
that we decided to make is a merge between the FitBit app, and the When I Work app. The
logo that we designed will appear on the loading screen when users are initially entering the app
itself.
The main screen or home screen shows the user to view the date and time along with the events
they have chosen to be interested in for that particular day. The date and time icon in the top
center of this screen can function as a quick link to a camera feature where users can take
pictures throughout the day of the event, as well as have the ability to transfer these pictures to
the community feature or to SnapChat with our design for the Welcoming Week Filter. A small
camera symbol will appear in a translucent fashion near the top right corner of the date and time
icon so users that may not be too familiar with phones will be able to recognize the known icon
for a camera. This screen can fit a maximum of six events, and users can scroll using the right
and left arrows to change days.
The final screen that appears in the app is only accessible if changes to events, cancellations, or
announcements come up throughout Welcoming Week. Users will be able to see a red
notification number similar to what is seen on Facebook that lets the individual know something
has taken place that may affect the schedule they have chosen given their interests in the events
displayed.

SnapChat Filter
Each of these app/social media components play into one another by creating a connection
through popular communication means that occur today. We thought it would be important to
create something that would create the younger community (SnapChat), and the social
community (Facebook). Incorporating each of these means into the app was an important step to
take, and provide to the users because in todays society there are many individuals that like if
multiple ways of communication can be compiled into one area which is an option in the app if
users choose to do so.
Postcard
On the top of the postcard/flyer there is a row of stick figures holding hands that spans across to
the end of the page, offering a sense of being together in a community. A yellow star with red
outline is at the top right corner, which provides balance and contrast so the page does not
become too left-oriented, along with small stars as bullet points that feature some events in a
vertical alignment with provided contact information toward the bottom. Repetition is also
created with a straight line spanning across that curves up/down on the right side. For more
emphasis on Welcoming Weeks positive message, the words Community. Support. Diversity.
Change. Learning. are at the bottom of the postcard, giving the reader a strong sense of
belonging in a new community of Fargo-Moorhead and, hopefully, motivation to attend the
events.
Photo Collection
We chose to include photos that were not only contemporary in nature, but also photos that
depict immigration in previous generations. We were even able to find two photos of
homesteading immigrants in North Dakota. We made the choice to depict immigration now and
in the past because while Welcoming Week seeks to foster community for individuals who are
new to the Fargo-Moorhead area, its mission also touches on a much more expansive legacy of
immigration and refugee resettlement in the United States. In our photo choices, we looked for
photos that displayed a variety of individuals and cultural backgrounds. Some of the photos
display children; some display older women; some display men. We wanted all people to be
represented. In several of the photos, traditional dress or makeup is displayed. By including an
array of images, the hope is to foster a sense of inclusivity in branding Welcoming Week to the
community and potential attendees.
