Dear John Frieda Manufacturers,

Our names are Genevieve Clemons, Ella Garcia, and Camille Embree. We all
currently attend Austin High school as freshman in the Academy for Global Studies
Program, and recently completed a project for our geometry class. Our goal was to pick
a product and find ways to make its packaging more space efficient and eco-friendly.
We chose your Extra Strength Six Effects Serum (Frizz Ease) product because our
group members were fond of it, but could see some potential changes to save space
and money.
In the initial stage of this project, we analyzed the original packaging of your
product, using geometric volume to determine how much space was used or unused.
We measured dimensions of the original product using formulas to calculate the total
volume of 163.36 cm3. Using this volume, we calculated the air space volume which
was 107.4633 cm3 and found that 78 percent of this product is air space. We also
discovered that there was an unnecessary use of packaging on the inside holding the
product, creating two layers of plastic. Our only change we suggest for the Frizz Ease
packaging is to eliminate the purple center tube holding the product and add a base to
the clear outer plastic to hold the product instead.
This change is beneficial for Frizz Ease because it makes production cheaper
and easier with one less layer of plastic to produce. In the end, the amount of empty
space will be reduced to a meager 11 percent. When designing the improved product
we decided to keep the shape of the product and the original pump. To make the
product more visible and pleasing to the eye, we recommend that the outer plastic is
made of a different color such as blue or purple. All the information can still be printed
on the outside.
By incorporating these changes, Frizz Ease can increase space efficiency, and
use less plastic for economic and environmental benefits. By producing only one layer
of plastic for 500 bottles, roughly 17,238.62 in2 less plastic will be used, reducing cost
and waste immensely. These small changes will be incredibly beneficial, helping to
master the precarious balance of customer satisfaction and manufacturer ease. We
thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Genevieve Clemons Ella Garcia Camille Embree
