Missouri Pre-Service Teacher Assessment (MoPTA)

Lesson Plan Format

1. Standards/Quality Indicators/Skills
Missouri and national standards, quality indicators, and skills addressed by this lesson

3.LS3.C.1 Construct an argument with evidence that in a particular ecosystem some organismsbased on
structural adaptations or behaviorscan survive well, some survive less well, and some cannot. (Clarification
Statement: Examples of evidence could include needs and characteristics of the organisms and habitats involved.
The organisms and their habitat make up a system in which the parts depend on each other.)

2. Learning Objectives (Goals) and Outcomes

The lessons objectives (goals) and learning outcomes appropriate for meeting curricular and student needs

Students will be able to explain what an ecosystem and habitat are. Students will be able to identify which
organisms go in the correct layers of the ocean zone. Students will be able to compare ecosystems and explain
how some organisms survive well, survive less, and some not at all.

3. Assessment (type[s] of assessment used throughout the lesson)

Assessment(s) before, during, and after the lesson

Before: Start the KWL Chart (in the power point)

During: I will be walking around the room making sure that my students are working, keeping them on task, and
helping/guiding any students that may need help.
After: Finish the KWL Chart (in the power point for students to see, as they each finish filling out their own)
Students will hand in when they are done.

4. Lesson Structure and Procedures Sequence of events of the lesson elements.

(The before, during, and after the lesson, e.g., Engagement/Opening, Procedures, Guided Practice,
Conclusion)

1. Watch a 3:39 minute YouTube video on Aquatic Ecosystems https://youtu.be/fkj_1F_1nkc

2. Pass out KWL Chart to each of the students. Divide them up into groups and give them a few minutes to
work on. Ask each group what they came up with and I will write it on the smart board.
3. Show the students a Power Point over ocean zones
4. Pass out the Open Ocean Animal Flashcards students will have time to color them and then they will get
into groups so they can play a matching game with them. I will be reading the descriptions of each to the
students while they are doing this. Then the students will color a piece of paper representing the three
ocean zones they learned about and cut and paste their organisms in the correct layer. Students may use
their books or the bulletin board for help.
5. We will finish by going back to the KWL Chart and finish filling out, talking about what they have learned.
5. Instructional Strategies
Teacher approach to helping students achieve the learning objectives (goals) and meet their needs

1. I will lead a group discussion using the smartboard and then a presentation.
2. Students will lead their own group discussions while working on their KWL Charts, playing the matching
game and then while putting their organisms in the correct ocean zones.

6. Learning Activities
Opportunities provided for students to develop knowledge and skills of the learning objectives (goals)

Students will learn organisms and the different ocean zone layers and be able to put the organisms in the
correct ocean zone.

7. Resources and Materials

List of materials used in the planning of and during the instruction of the lesson

Smartboard
Crayons
Glue
Pencils
Scissors
Venn Diagram
Open Ocean Power Point
KWL Chart Handouts
Open Ocean Animal Flashcards Handout

8. Technology
Instructional and/or assistive technology incorporated into the lesson to enhance instruction and student
learning

I will be using the smartboard to show a power point of the ocean zones and the organisms living in them.

9. Differentiation/Accommodations/Modifications/Increase in Rigor
To help meet the needs of all learners, learning differences, cultural and language differences, etc.

Students that need help completing the assignment will have help. The exceptional learners will be the leaders in
their group and be able to help the other students.

10. Classroom Management

Strategies consistent with the learning needs of the lesson that also meet student behavior needs to help
keep students on task and actively engaged

I will be walking around the classroom to make sure that my students are on task and stay focused. I will be using
the classroom Dojo to help motivate students to stay on task.

11. Extensions
Activities for early finishers that extend students understanding of and thinking about the learning
objectives (goals) by applying their new knowledge in a different way

Students will be able to go on the internet and play Open Ocean Habitats to help re-enforce what they have learned
today. https://coast.noaa.gov/psc/sea/content/open-ocean-habitats.html

12. Follow-up to Todays Lesson

Quick activity for review or building on todays learning that will deepen student understanding and
interconnect concepts (may be incorporated tomorrow or throughout the unit)

We will review todays lesson and then we will do a Venn diagram comparing two ocean animals, and then we will
play Open Ocean Bingo as a review for their test.
