THE HOLY SPIRIT, THIRD PERSON

Adventists believe in the non-immortality of the soul. We teach that man

does not have a separate spirit that lives on when we die. We believe
that the word spirit when referring to man means his thoughts,
emotions, his rational soul or mind. It is who he is.

Spirit – Hebrew 7307 = breath, rational being, mind, wind.

Greek 4151 = breath, rational being, mind wind.

Gen 1: 26 – Man was created in the image and likeness of God.

1 Cor 2:11 – For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit
of man which is in him? Even so the things of God knoweth no man
but the Spirit of God.

Notice what man’s spirit (mind) is to man which is in him, even so is

God’s Spirit (mind) to God. This is a clear statement that cannot be
distorted. Notice carefully it is not saying that God’s Spirit is the same
as ours, but what our spirit (mind, soul, rational being) is to us, even so
is God’s Spirit (mind) to God.

This text is a comparison not a contrast. If God’s Spirit is a separate

Being with his own thoughts, then this text would not make sense
because that would be a contrast to what our spirit is to us. Even the
grammar would be wrong, for it says the Spirit of God.
The only way one can get around this verse is to say that the Spirit of
God here is not referring to the Holy Spirit.

Eph 4: 30 – Holy Spirit of God.

1 Th 4 : 8 – His Holy Spirit.

Notice how the word Spirit is often used when referring to man.

Ps 32: 2 – Whose Spirit (mind) there is no guile. (guile means

falsehood, deceit) these things begin in the mind.
Dan 2:3 – The king’s spirit (mind) was troubled.
Dan 6:3 – Daniel had an excellent spirit in him. (Attitude, knowledge, etc.)

2
Acts 17:16 – Paul’s spirit was stirred, (Downhearted, indignant) in him.
As we have already noted, our spirit is our mind, emotions, our
character. It is who we are. It is our person.
As an example we could say, “he is a reputable person”.

Q - What makes a person reputable?

A - His words and conduct; his character.

Q - What are his words and conduct inspired or motivated by?

A - His mind, his thoughts.

Prov 23:7. “For as he thinketh in his heart (mind), so is he.”

Alternatively we could say, “that person is not to be trusted”. Again if
someone is untrustworthy, it is because they are motivated or inclined
by their own thoughts to be so.
Remember, Ps 32:2. “in whose spirit there is no guile”. The Bible says
the person has no guile (falsehood) because the spirit (mind) is honest.

Jn 1:47. Jesus read Nathaniel’s mind and saw no guile.

It is important to know that the spirit is part of the person. It is what

makes them who they are, good or bad. It is their character, their
personality.

1Cor 2:11. This text tells us it is the same for God. His Spirit is a
description of who He is. It is His person.
Notice how God’s Spirit is a description of His character or person.

(Substitute the word Spirit for God’s person)

God is truth Jn 15:26 Spirit is truth

God is graceful Heb 10:29 Spirit of grace
God is eternal Heb 9:14 Spirit is eternal
God is holy Eph 4:30 Spirit is holy
God is wisdom Eph 1:17 Spirit is wisdom
God is love Gal 5:22 Spirit is love

These are all descriptions of God’s character, His person.

No one will deny God is all these things and much more, but many
teach that these attributes belong to the Holy Spirit as a separate
Being, with His own mind and will.

3
Jn 15:26 tells us that “the Spirit of truth which proceedeth from the
Father.” This doesn’t mean sent.

It says “proceedeth from” {Greek 1607 ekporeuomai -means issue

from, come out of, proceed out of, to emanate from.}
Important - this is why the Bible and Spirit of Prophecy never use the
term ‘God the Holy Spirit’. This term implies the Spirit is God in His own
right, separate and distinct, even though He may be one in purpose
with God and Jesus.
Q – What right do people have to change a text without any Biblical
authority, one that completely changes the meaning of what God
intends?

Prov 30:6 – We are counselled to “add not unto his words lest he
reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.” This is a serious matter as
many are being deceived.

Take out your concordance and look up the hundreds of times the term
Spirit of God or Spirit of the Lord (and other such terms) are used.
Never once is the term ‘God the Holy Spirit.’ Used. Then ask yourself
-- Who is adding to God’s word? Who will be found a liar?
Rev 16:14. The Bible speaks about the spirits of devils.
Sometimes these evil spirits manifest themselves through possessing
someone physically - Mk 9:25. Sometimes many of them - Mk 5:8.
They are called wicked spirit, foul spirit, unclean spirit, dumb spirit etc.
Acts 16:18. Paul commands in the name of Jesus Christ for the evil
spirit to come out of her.
4
Q – Was the spirit a person?

A – Yes “And he came out the same hour.”

Sometimes these spirits possess the mind without one noticing a

physical difference.

Acts 5:3. The thoughts of Ananias were controlled by Satan (no

visible sign)

Matt 16:23. Satan spoke through Peter.

RH April 6 1897. ”Christ addressed the author of the thought saying

get thee behind me Satan. “
These are all manifestations of evil spirits.

Spirit can also refer to teachings, doctrines

Example . spirit of antichrist - 1 Jn 4:3 - false sprits, false prophets
teaching false doctrines. 1Jn 4:1.

Summary –
We have noted that in every application the ‘spirit’ is always
possessive. The wicked, unclean, foul spirits are the spirits themselves.
The spirit of antichrist, false doctrines etc. are the teachings of these
spirits, namely Satan and his demons. These things belong to them;
it’s what they are.

So too the Spirit of truth, love, meekness, humility, righteousness and

liberty belongs to God.

Q – Why then do we always apply the wicked and false spirits to the
devils themselves? Rev 16:14

But, for the Spirit of truth and righteousness we don’t apply it directly to
God the Father from whom it proceeds. Instead we apply it to another
Being. How can we, when it is called Spirit of God, Spirit of Christ,
Spirit of His Son, His Spirit, My Spirit? See 2 Cor 3:17
This is why the Holy Spirit is sometimes referred to with personal
pronouns. Like He, Himself, because it is God Himself working through
His omnipresent Spirit.
5
14 MR 23 – “He [Jesus] would represent Himself as present in all
places by His Holy Spirit, as the omnipresent.”

Also the Spirit is referred to as “it” in the Bible.

1 Pt 1:11 Rom 8:16, 26. 1 Jn 2:27.

Q – If the Spirit was a separate God being from the Father and Son,
how can it be referred to as an “it”?

Think of the praises used for God -- Holy, Almighty, Most High…

Angels never cease from praising and worshipping Him. How can the
Bible and Spirit of Prophecy refer to the Holy Spirit hundreds of times
as an “it”, if He is God? Not even people are referred to this way,
unless it is to offend!

Q – Why did Ellen White refer to the Holy Spirit as a third person if it is
part of God?

A – God’s Spirit can operate independently of His body.

It can be “poured out”, “breathed upon”, “shed abroad”, “fell upon” etc.

Because it is a Spirit, it is never mentioned sitting on a throne, standing

by the throne or in the councils of heaven.

Ps 139:7,8 – God can be everywhere present through His Spirit.

Jer 23:24 2 Chron 16:9

God can convict, speak and comfort by His Spirit.

Ps 51:11. It is His personal presence.

1. Eph 4:4 There is only one Spirit.

2. Jn 15:26. It proceeds from the Father.

6
3. Jn 3:34. God has given His Spirit not by measure unto His Son.

4. Heb1:3. The Son, being the express image of His Father, has the
same Spirit. Rom 8:9

5. Gal 4:6 And God sends forth the Spirit of His Son into our hearts
(mind). Phil 2:5

6. Eph 2:18. Through Christ, we have access unto the Father.

7. Eph 4:6. There is one God and Father of all who is above all and
through all and in you all.

8. 1Cor 15:28. That God may be all in all.

be all in all. CHILDREN Father through Christ.

Remember how we began this study.

We saw that the spirit of a person is what makes them who they are. It’s
their mind, personality, their character good or bad.

7
We saw the same with fallen angels.

We noted that man was made in the image and likeness of God.

We saw that as our spirit (mind) is to us, so is God’s Spirit (mind) to

God.

We noted the Spirit is always used in the possessive tense i.e. Spirit of
God, spirits of devils etc.

We noted that never once in all Scripture is the Spirit called God the
Holy Spirit.

We noted that the Spirit does not have a body, that it can be poured
out, breathed upon, and shed abroad.

For these reasons it is never mentioned as sitting on a throne, or

standing beside God.

The Spirit is never mentioned taking part in the heavenly councils,

before or after sin.

We noted that through His Spirit, God is everywhere present.

God can personally comfort us convict and strengthen us.

2 Cor. 1:3,4 God, the Father, is our Comforter also.

Jn 14:23. God the Father and His Son abide with us through the
Spirit.

Jn 15:26. It proceeds out of the Father.

Ps 139:7-8. Jer 23:24. God is personally active everywhere in His

creation by His Spirit.
God’s Spirit can rightly be called the third person, character, personality
or power of the heavenly trio. Because God’s Spirit is not confined to
His body. Christ can personally dwell in His disciples through His Spirit
and bring His victories into their lives.

8
Jn 20:22 “He breathed on [them], and saith unto them, Receive ye the
Holy Ghost:”

Remember we noticed the Spirit was the life of the person.

Jesus breathed on them and they received the Spirit.

Q - Where does your breath come from?

A. – From inside of you.
Jesus breathed on His disciples His Spirit, His life.
Notice how it is stated below in ‘The Desire of Ages’.

DA 805. “The Holy Spirit is the breath of spiritual life in the soul. The
impartation of the Spirit is the impartation of the life of Christ. It
imbues the receiver with the attributes of Christ.”

2MR 28. “The influence of the Holy Spirit is the life of Christ in the soul.
We do not now see Christ and speak to Him, but His Holy Spirit is just
as near us in one place as another.”

Rev 2:1. Jesus walks in the midst of the seven golden candlesticks.

Q - What are the candlesticks?

A - Rev 1:20. The seven candlesticks are the seven churches.

So Jesus, not someone else, is walking among the churches.

RH May 26 1904. “Christ is in the midst of the seven golden

candlesticks, walking from church to church, from congregation to
congregation, from heart to heart.”
RH May 26 1904. “Christ walks in the midst of His churches through
the length and breadth of the earth. He looks with intense interest to
see whether His people are in such a condition spiritually that they can
advance his kingdom. He is present in every assembly of the church.”
This is why Ellen White could say the Holy Spirit is walking these
grounds. {Ev 616.5} (See also: 8T 17.2, 4T 529.1)
CM 107 “He Impresses Hearts” -- The Lord Jesus, standing by the side
of the canvasser, walking with them, is the chief worker. If we recognize
Christ as the One who is with us to prepare the way, the Holy Spirit by
our side will make impressions in just the lines needed.”

9
RH May 19 1904. par 3. “Sin could be resisted and overcome only
through the mighty agency of the third person of the Godhead, who
would come with no modified energy, but in the fullness of divine power.
It is the Spirit that makes effectual what has been wrought out by the
world's Redeemer. It is by the Spirit that the heart is made pure.
Through the Spirit the believer becomes a partaker of the divine nature.
Christ has given His Spirit as a divine power to overcome all
hereditary and cultivated tendencies to evil, and to impress His own
character upon the church.”

Q.- Who is this third person of the Godhead?

A = His Spirit.

RH May 19 1904. par 1. Notice “Christ declared that after His

ascension, He would send to His church, as His crowning gift, the
Comforter, who was to take His place. This Comforter is the Holy Spirit
-- the soul of His life, the efficacy of His church, the light and life of
the world. With His Spirit Christ sends a reconciling influence and a
power that takes away sin.”

RH April 5 1906. “The Holy Spirit, which proceeds from the only
begotten Son of God,”

MH 159. “All who consecrate body, soul, and spirit to His service will be
constantly receiving a new endowment of physical, mental, and spiritual
power. The inexhaustible supplies of heaven are at their command.
Christ gives them the breath of His own Spirit, the life of His own
life. [Remember His Spirit is His life] The Holy Spirit puts forth its
highest energies to work in mind and heart.”

DA 669.2 “The Holy Spirit is Christ's representative, but divested of the

personality of humanity, and independent thereof. Cumbered with
humanity, Christ could not be in every place personally. Therefore it was
for their interest that He should go to the Father, and send the Spirit to
be His successor on earth. No one could then have any advantage
because of his location or his personal contact with Christ. By the Spirit
the Saviour would be accessible to all.
10
In this sense He would be nearer to them than if He had not ascended
on high….When for the truth's sake the believer stands at the bar of
unrighteous tribunals, Christ stands by his side. All the reproaches that
fall upon him, fall upon Christ. Christ is condemned over again in the
person of His disciple. When one is incarcerated in prison walls, Christ
ravishes the heart with His love.”

Divested means to shed or strip off..

The Holy Spirit never became incarnate.
Only Christ took humanity upon Himself.
(See also 14MR 23.3)

Jesus said.

I will come to you.

I will never leave you nor forsake you.

I am with you alway even unto the end of the world.
