Unit 78 assignment 2 Ciaran Morton

Diary
In this document/diary I am going to document how I create all of my
assets and images, this will all be documented and screen shotted below
including, what size canvases I set, what images assets I use, what tools I
use and how I use them to edit the images into the game graphics
images.
As I have used images of off the internet for ideas I
found the image to the right, this image gave me the
idea to add in another object which is a sort of large
cane that could be used as a weapon. Below the
image to the right is a cropped/zoomed in image of
the figure in the image to the right.
I also like this image as it includes fog, greyscale and
it is actually looks like a painting for the close up I
pasted below the image to the right.

The image to the far right shows a cloaked figure from the image
above, this gave me the idea to add in a staff/cane weapon as
this is quite a realistic object that is easily found in real forests.
This would add to the realism as I am not going to include giant
weapons or guns in the game as it is not at all realistic to find
either a sword, knife or gun in the forest.

As I am going to create several different images for

different environments and day/night time aspects I
also like the image to the right. I like this image as it
almost the complete opposite of the image I explained
above, in this image to the right it is a complete
different time set, there are long shadows along the
road, the leaves have all fallen the skies are clear and
there is a great blue/brown colour scheme in this image, the colour
scheme in this image is quite stereotypical among images and fashion, in
the image to the right is shows several different types of
blue/brown colour concepts. This small image is an example of
the stereotypically used colour scheme used in the forest
picture above.

Unit 78 assignment 2 Ciaran Morton

As well as these two images I explained and analysed above, I have also
saved a total of seven different interesting forest images, to the right is a
small list of all of the images I decided to save to try and get ideas.
The two images I analysed above are the best two I found so far, this
is because these two have me some ideas for the game graphics I
am going to create based on the time of day they are going to be
shot in, the angle on the images based on the shading and the
shadows in the image e.g. I will create an image which is very bright
and no shadows, another with small shadows, another with long
casting shadows and one that is getting dark (the golden hour) and
another of darkness.
Throughout this diary/ throughout this unit I am going to occasionally add
in small sections to this document where I will add in an UPDATE
(update)UPDATE--. This will basically indicate when I have had an idea
about the graphics or how to improve the graphics I am designing. As
long as I think that I am able to update my work within the timeframe I will
apply the updates, if I cannot I will document it and try and add it in
during the update time so that I can get the best results in this
assignment.
--The text above was written before I was handed the brief for this
assignment (there are notes on the work I am going to do and notes on
the images I have found before I start editing the images)
(5/12/16) Yesterday I went out from 1PM to 7PM and took images of and
around the woods during daylight and night, I did
this to show that the game had a day/night cycle.
In the screen shot to the right it shows the 82
images that I have taken during the day, a lot of
these are duplicates I took to ensure I had a good
clear image to use as I cannot do anything with
blurred or skewed images now as I am in college
and cannot take more images now.
As I have mentioned above a lot of these images are
duplicates, below I am going to add more detail onto
what I am now going to do with all of these assets
(I should also mention That I have taken all of these
images of a public place on my own device therefore I have the right to
use ALL of these assets in my work as no one has or can copy right
images of this public place.)

2
Unit 78 assignment 2 Ciaran Morton

In the image to the right it shows

that I have taken all of the
duplicate images and have
created 15 separate folders to
better store and evaluate each
image and lower the number of images from 82 to about 15/20 so that I
can better edit and give each image a lot more time than if I were trying
to edit all 82, on top of this by creating a diary I am slowing my progress
down by a great deal as every action I make on the images I have to
document and analyse and explain which will be very tedious so I am
going to FULLY explain how I edited the first one, then after that I am just
going to paste all of the images I am using in a collage of images, I am
however going to annotate the collage with something like All of the final
graphics have been edited and are shown below.
Before I start to edit the images I am going to open each folder
shown above (folder 1 open to the right.) At this point, these
names mean pretty much nothing as I took the images on a
device that will GEO tag and name the images based on how
many images I already have and give each image a default name
based on what number image it is in my devices internal
storage). As I do not know which image is which I am going to
change the settings in order to have a large preview of all of
the images this is shown to the right:
Straight away I can delete the two in the red box to the right,
this is because I am making a 1st person game so portrait
images are not appropriate for the game graphics. This
narrows the 8 images down to 4, now I am going to look at
each of them in detail and post the best one below.

3
Unit 78 assignment 2 Ciaran Morton

I have chosen this one as it has the

best resolution compared to the
other three the image to the right.
This is the EXACT process I am
going to do with all 15 folders of
images I have taken, as this is going
to be a long and tedious process
without having to document it I am
going to use this documentation
above as an EXACT guide to what I
am doing with the other folders,
after I do this I am going to
document fully editing the image to
the right on PhotoShop.

Side note As I looked through the folder ladled 6 I found that I had my
thumb in all of the shots so none of these are salvageable, this is fine as I
have 80 images to choose from so losing 4 isnt a problem.
-Note- In folder 11 I am keeping 4 of the images as they are quite good.
-Note- As I have a lot of images and there is only 1 bad image in folder 14
I am going to get rid of this image. 7 is also a folder I am going to get rid
of, this leaves 15 good images that I am going to use. This leaves 15
images, as this is just the day images I am quickly going to edit these
down using the same tools and techniques I am going to use in the same
method to edit all 16 images.
Below is the documentation of the editing of the first image:

This image is PhotoShop

loading up, I am going to
import the first image as
shown below:

4
Unit 78 assignment 2 Ciaran Morton

This image is of the first

image after it was imported
into PhotoShop. Below I am
going to test different editing
techniques on the image to
see if I can improve upon the
image, however I am not
going to edit it too much.

This red circle

shows the main
area of focus
when I an
editing this
image as this
looks like a
shadow so I am
going to try and
use the burn tool
to blend in this
at the bottom.

5
Unit 78 assignment 2 Ciaran Morton

This is the burned

image; this is a lot
better than the un-
burned image as the
shadows
surroundings has
been burned.
The image below
the image to the
right is the burn tool

(Image to the far right is the burn tool)

I can also use the paint tool on a 5% opacity to tint the sky
slightly whiter in order to make the sky look better, I chose
5% as it is very low but still noticeable.

I do this by selecting the selector

tool shown to the
right.
This selects the
sky, then I selected
the paint tool.

The tool to the right

is the paint tool.

6
Unit 78 assignment 2 Ciaran Morton

The image to the left shows the opacity being lowered

to 5% as I specified above when describing what I am
going to do this section.

This is the finished 1st image, all I

am going to do to these
images is burn in the
imperfections then
highlight some aspect or
object with a low opacity paint
tool.
This is a very good technique to
use as it obviously keeps the
realism but also edits the image to
look a bit better than real life as the skies are slightly clearer and the
grass is slightly greener.

As I mentioned above this is going to be tedious enough, above is what

tools I use on the images and how I set them up and how I use them and
what order I use them, so to save time and space on this document I am
just going to paste all of the finished graphics below.

Note on the fifth image I had to remove plane markings in the sky
which used a technique where I copied the colour of the shy next to the
plane mark and slowly applied that colour to the cloud until it was no
longer visible, then I continued to shade the new sky like the original to
add realism to the image and make it look the same.
On the 6th image I used the white technique as I did on the first image to
highlight the pathway on the image as seen on the right.

7
Unit 78 assignment 2 Ciaran Morton

As shown in the image to the right, I edited this

slightly but tried to keep as much realism as possible,
all I did to this image was add in a lightened path way
and burned the trees by 3%.

On the 7th image I added bark to the tree to the right

as shown to the right.
This image has also been slightly edited as I have
added a very slight white tint to the bottom and fixed
a small section of the tree by using the patch tool and
the burn tool to blend the patched up tree bark in with
the original image.

On one of the images I had houses in the background, so I had to use a

combination of field patches and sky patches to form a new ground over
the houses. update The last image could not be edited as the quality of
the patches from the images werent enough to completely remove three
houses from the image. This image wont be used as I already have 14
images fully edited for the day alone.

Below are all of the fully edited 14 images I edited today:

Unit 78 assignment 2 Ciaran Morton

(6/12/16) - I was handed the assignment brief for unit 78 assignment 2

today, this is the brief for this work. So today I have to:

Create two or more story boards as I already have 2

Start working on the proposal
Continue to edit the night images (total of 5)
Document how I edit the night images
Update the sources document
Update the ILP
Update the diary.

I will paste/import the story boards later on in this document, this will be
around the last few pages of the document as these are the lowest priority
in my list, the top priority is the proposal.
-12/12/16-
Received the brief today, from this point in the diary I have edited the
images without the brief as I completed the previous assignment early,
the brief will be covered on Diary part 2.
