PhD position in Product Engineering: Lean Product Development IVT-72/15


Today companies attempt to introduce Lean practices in new product development to gain competitive advantage in the global market
place. However, the application of Lean outside the factory floor is not straightforwardespecially when it is introduced in functional
areas that differ significantly from manufacturing, such as New Product Development. In this PhD project we seek to study Lean product
development in a productivity and innovation perspective for new, value-added products. The academic goal is to gain new insights into
strategies for contextual implementation of lean in engineering functions. The more practical goal is to develop new methods and tools
that would help companies develop improve their practices and capabilities, thereby gaining competitive advantage. The research will
build on prior research within the same field and will organized as a part of a KPN project, TrollLabs, funded by the Research Council
Norway and located within Engineering Design and Materials, NTNU. The successful applicant will be a part of an international research
group of 8 - 10 PhD candidates working within the field of Product Design, Engineering and Innovation.

The candidate has to hold a MSc degree in Mechanical Engineering, Design, Technology Management, Operations Management or
equivalent. MBAs with strong background in new product development, innovation or entrepreneurship may also qualify. The successful
applicant must have excellent communication skills and proven capabilities in working in multidisciplinary teams. The candidate must
meet NTNUs grade requirements from previous studies. Industrial experience is considered a strong asset in the selection of the right
candidate.

Conditions of appointment:

PhD Candidates are remunerated in code 1017, and are normally remunerated at wage level 50, gross NOK 429 400 before tax. There
will be a 2 % deduction to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund from gross wage.

Engagement as a PhD Candidate is done in accordance with "Regulation concerning terms and conditions of employment for the posts
of post-doctoral research fellow, research fellow, research assistant and resident", given by the Ministry of Education and Research of
19.07.2010. The goal of the positions is to obtain a PhD degree. Applicants will engage in an organized PhD training program, and
appointment requires approval of the applicants plan for a PhD study within three months from the date of commencement. See

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants. The
