Teacher Code of Ethics

I recognize that as an educator, I have a responsibility to my students, my school, and

society as a whole to help shape not only the future of education, but also the future of society. In
codifying the ethics of my classroom, I am creating a reference for myself for those moments
when I am faced with making difficult decisions or when I feel I have lost my direction. While I
might not be able to control all of the changes I am bound to come across in the field of
education, I can control how I respond to these changes as long as I am able to stick by this code.
As long as my foundation is solid?

I. The decisions I make and the actions I take will be based on what is best for students and
colleagues.

I will be an advocate for my students and colleagues. I will be sure that the decisions
made on their behalf will positively affect their education and their ability to educate
respectively. I will be sure that the decisions made on their behalf will also positively
affect them as individuals. If they are not I will be a voice for them.

II. I will strive to push my students to grow not only academically, but also as individuals.

I will do my best to teach my students to advocate for themselves. I will do my best to

teach them to take responsibility for their actions. I will push them to take risks, to make
predictions based on what they already know, to think for themselves, and to strive for
understanding.

III. Create a safe learning environment for students.

I will not tolerate actions or words meant to harm an individual in my classroom or

school. I will do my best to show my students that we learn through our mistakes and that
we need to allow others the right to make their own without fear of judgment.

IV. I will strive to ignite a passion for learning in my classroom.

I will share the excitement of being successful after facing a difficult task or assignment. I will
teach with passion.
