Mahoney, Sarah. "Parenting With a Chronic Illness." Parents. Parents, 31 Mar. 2017. Web. 05

Apr. 2017.

The purpose of this source was to explain how parents with a chronic illness adapt to

parenting. The source explains that accepting the new life, surrounding yourself with the

appropriate people, letting the small things go, and finding the silver lining in every

situation is important. The professionals explain how learning how to juggle the chaos

between children and the chronic illness is important. Also, adjusting along the way is

important for everyone in the family, especially the children.

This source is relevant to my inquiry topic because it describes how the parenting might

change when a parent is diagnosed with a chronic illness, which in turn affects the

children. This describes how the children might notice a difference in their parent with a

chronic illness. This source also helps provide insight into how chronically ill parents can

normalize things as much as possible for their children.

This was provided by Parents.com for Parents Magazine. It was written by Sarah

Mahoney. It provides professional insight and facts from Dr. Rosalind Dorlen, Dr. Elvira

Aletta, and Dr. Susan McDaniel. Dr. Elvira Aletta is a psychotherapist, who also battles

scleroderma, a chronic auto-immune disease. Dr. Rosalind Dorlen is a psychotherapist

with Overlook Hospital, specializing in anxiety with long-term health problems. Dr.

Susan McDaniel is a director of the institute for Family at the University of Rochester.

The source also provides personal insight from multiple mothers with various different

chronic illnesses.

International, Inc. Advanced Solutions. "Chronic Illness." Chronic Illness. American Association

for Marriage and Family Therapy, 2002. Web. 09 Apr. 2017.

This source depicts how a family members chronic illness can affect everyone in the

family. The source describes how certain aspects of a familys everyday routine can be

altered from a family members chronic illness. It also explains how family members

emotions are also affected throughout the entire journey. Not only is the sick family

member experiencing the illness, but rather the entire family.

This relates to my inquiry topic because it depicts how chronic illnesses not only affect

the sick family member, but also everyone in the family. It gives insight into how the

mental health of family members can be affected due to chronic illness in the family. The

source also provides ideas into how families can alleviate the stress and anxiety

associated with the chronic illness within the family.

The source is from the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy

Organization. The article was written by Dr. David Seaburn. He is an assistant professor

of Acute and Chronic Illness: A Practical Guide for Primary Care Physicians (2007):

109-22. IG Living. Web. 5 Apr. 2017.

This source describes the impact that chronic illnesses can induce on families. It not only

provides different coping strategies, but describes how family members might handle the

stress of a chronic illness in the family differently. The source explains that coping

strategies might not be enough, and that professional help may need to be sought. Also,

communication and support is vital in handling a chronic illness in the family. Finally, the

source describes that taking care of physical and psychological health issues that may

arise because of the chronic illness in the family is important.

This source is relevant to my inquiry because it depicts how to cope with a family

members chronic illness, and the avenues of help to seek. The source provides many

ideas and methods of coping. It also explains how different family members may need

different needs depending on how they are handling the sickness in the family. It points

out how professional help may be needed if coping methods arent enough.

Experience a Parent Being Chronically Ill: A Qualitative Analysis of Interviews with

Children of Hemodialysis Patients]." Praxis Der Kinderpsychologie Und

Kinderpsychiatrie. U.S. National Library of Medicine, 2006. Web. 05 Apr. 2017.

This source was scientific research done on how children experience a parent being

chronically ill. The results depicted that the children had a great deal of responsibility in

caring for their sick parent. The results showed that most of the children tried to avoid

starting conflict with their parent, and struggled with independence. The older children in

the study showed immense fear in medical complications, and sadness. The results also

described how a child with a chronically ill parent requires psychological adaptation.

This source relates to my inquiry because it describes how children handle a parent with a

chronic illness. It describes how children have a hard time doing things on their own

because of their fear of leaving their parent. The source also helps provide insight into

how a parent with a chronic illness requires psychological adaptation for the children

affected.
