1. A separately excited DC generator, with compensating windings, is rated 6kW, 120V, 50A, and 1800
rpm (with magnetization curve shown below). It has a field current of 5A. The following data are
known about the machine:

Ra 0.18 ohms Vf 120 V

Radj 0 to 30 ohms Rf 24 ohms
No. of turns at field 1000 turns/pole

a. If the generator is
operating at no load, what is
the range of voltage
adjustments that can be
achieved by changing Radj?
b. If the field rheostat is
allowed to vary from 0 to 30
ohms and the generators
speed is allowed to vary
from 1500 to 2000 rpm,
what are the maximum and
minimum no-load voltages
in the generator?
c. If the armature current of
the generator is 50A, the
speed is 1700 rpm, and the
terminal voltage is 106 V,
how much field current must
be flowing in the generator?

Bonus: Two shunt

generators A and B having
linear load-characteristics
operate in parallel. The
voltage of gen A falls from
240V at no-load to 220V at
200A; while that of gen B
falls from 245V at no-load to 220V at 150A. Determine the currents supplied by each machine to a common
load of 300A and the bus-bar voltage.
