1984 - George Orwell: Questions

1. Describe the governments control over its citizens. Use details from the novel to
Castillo, 4

show the ways in which the citizens have lost their individuality. Consider the Ministries, the
Three-Minute Hate, Helicopter (drones), other
- the Two Minutes Hate was not that one was obliged to act a part, but that it was
impossible to avoid joining in. Within thirty seconds any pretence was always
unnecessary. A hideous ecstasy of fear and vindictiveness, a desire to kill, to torture, to
smash faces in with a sledge hammer, seemed to flow through the whole group of people
like an electric current, turning one even against one's will into a grimacing, screaming
lunatic. And yet the rage that one felt was an abstract, undirected emotion which could be
switched from one object to another like the flame of a blowlamp.

2. Define Newspeak and what differentiates it from Oldspeak. Give examples from
the text to support your answer. Explain the Inner Partys purpose in creating
Newspeak and how it relates to thought.
- Newspeak is a controlled language, of restricted grammar and limited vocabulary,
a linguistic design meant to limit the freedom of thoughtpersonal identity, self-
expression, free willthat ideologically threatens the rgime of Big Brother and the
Party, who thus criminalised such concepts as thoughtcrime, contradictions of Ingsoc
orthodoxy. In an excerpt from the book it is said, it was expected that Newspeak would
have finally superseded Oldspeak (or standard English, as we should call it) by about the
year 2050. Meanwhile it gained ground steadily, all Party members tending to use
Newspeak words and grammatical construction more and more in their everyday speech.

3. Discuss Winstons relationship with women throughout the novel. Be sure to

address his mother, Julia, and his wife. How does the Partys attitude toward sex
affect his relationship with Julia and his wife?
- Winston dreamed about his mother that she in some way sacrificed herself for
him. He felt sad because she had died loving him, and in return he didnt because he was
too young and selfish. Marriage in the state means that they should not have a physical
attraction to one another. They are just married to have children and nothing more.
Winstons marriage was to Katherine, and he did not love her at all.

4. Discuss Orwells use of memory and dreams to characterize Winston. Be sure to

refer to the theory of characterization in your response.
- Orwells use of memory and dreams to characterize Winston is a huge chunk of
what we the readers use to characterize Winston. Because he has selective memory,
everything Orwell presents to us in the novel is purposeful and very important to the
direct plot of the book. The dreams that WInston has are about a time that existed when
life was nicer. He dreams about his mother and sister and about a golden country. Or as
Winston says, A place where there is no darkness.

5. Choose a specific archetype and demonstrate its function in the novel. Determine
whether the archetype is being used traditionally or is being manipulated by
Orwell.
Castillo, 5

- In George Orwells 1984, Winston and Julia are archetypal of star-crossed lovers.
While inside the Ministry of Love, OBrien tells Winston that after his transformation is
complete, he will no longer be capable of love (Orwell 256). In the novel, Winston and
Julia are not forbidden by the universe to be together but by an omnipotent society. The
external expression of human emotion can be easily repressed, but a government cannot
deny its citizens the right to an internal passion, because love, the dignity of our
emotions, annihilates tyranny (Margery Fox). Without individuality of emotions, beliefs,
and opinions a functioning government does not exist but rather a dystopian society.

6. What are the satirical targets within 1984? How does Orwell suggest we avoid
becoming the society depicted in the novel?
- 1984 is a political satire. 1984 is a satire of totalitarian governments, and what
might happen if the government was allowed to be in complete and total control of the
people. Of course, it is exaggerated and even ridiculous at times, but the underlying
commentary and fear is very serious, especially when you look at it in the context of
when it was written.

7. What types of comedic devices/genres does Orwell employ to establish the

Juvenalian satire? Provide specific examples from the text.
- 1984 uses exaggeration to expose how much the government and upper class
people controlled the rest of the citizens of Oceania. Orwell pictures a society in which
the citizens out of the Inner Party (the highest class) were ridiculed because they had no
voice at all and were suffering by an extreme case of totalitarianism.
