Reflection of English 1302

The second composition class specifies the rhetorical aspect of writing and its

effectiveness. There is also more emphasis on the writing process, from extensive research to

rough drafts. The rough drafts are to be evaluated by the instructor and peers to give different

perspectives on the students input of the essay they are writing. Study guides are provided to aid

in the biweekly quizzes and short academic responses are assigned to give an insight on what to

expect on the major essays. Major essays are a critical piece of the course that teaches students

the importance of evidence, style, and organization. The variety of assignments successfully

strengthens students skills in writing.

I learned the effectiveness of transitioning paragraphs and strengthened the fragments that

I used to provide in my essays. I did not realize how crucial the beginning and end of a paragraph

was until it was suggested by my instructor. When starting a paragraph, an effective introduction

to the point that will be covered is needed. The reader should have an idea of what the writer will

be talking about to avoid any confusion. Once the writer closes their commentary, there should

also be a thought given to give a heads up to what the next idea will be. I would form a big

amount of fragments, which gives uncertainty to the reader. I learned that once a theory is

approached in one sentence, I have to clarify in the next sentence that I am still talking about the

same theory. For example if I stated a solution for saving the extinction of the Earth, I can not

start with Such as recycling, carpooling, using less water.. Instead, I should say Some

solutions to save the Earth can be recycling, carpooling, using less water.. Although, I have

improved and learned some skills, there are more I can enhance.

I feel that I still need to expand my vocabulary. When writing an essay, there is a need for

efficient words to grab the readers attention. Providing adequate and clever words makes the

reader intrigued, rather than repeating the same word. My vocabulary skills will probably

strengthen when I have to write essays as my core assignment in future classes. The most

effortless essay was the rhetorical analysis and the most difficult was the proposal. The rhetorical

analysis obtains the position of being the most easy because of the interest in my topic. I loved

Ronald Reagans inaugural address, so that made writing the paper fun to complete. The

proposal was a struggle for me because of not only the length, but because I feel that the task is

similar to the causal argument essay. The essay that taught me the most was the causal argument

because I gained more knowledge about how marijuana stands in the United States. I also

learned the benefits and concerns of legalizing marijuana.

The skills I developed from Composition II can help me with my future essays and in the

workforce. I plan on obtaining a masters degree, which means that I have many more essays and

courses ahead of me. I wish to become a physicians assistant so I have to complete a great deal

of paperwork, including a report for every patient that I contact. Overall, I will still use the

abilities that I learned from Composition II after completion of the course.

English 1302 enhanced my writing skills and has taught me how to write in a more efficient

and timely manner. From being quizzed on structuring arguments, to persuading an audience into

legalizing marijuana. In conclusion, this course has caused me to enhance my vocabulary,

transitions, and fragments.
