CHAPTER 4

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

This chapter discusses the results of friction experiments conducted on

pin-spacer and modified pin-spacer and properties of various yarn samples produced
with normal spacer, pin spacer and modified pin-spacer.

3.1 Co- efficient of friction of pinspacer and modified pinspacer

The capstan method in which yarn is wrapped around a pinspacer(Steel

rod) and the yarn is hung with a weight on one end to give a tension of 5 grams (T 1)

and another tension (T2) is measured by the Figure 4.1.From the measured tension, co-

efficient of friction of pinspacer could be calculated. In a similar manner ,Calculated

friction of modified pinspacer.

Figure 4.1 Stick slip curve for pinspacer and yarn

Figure 4.2 Stick slip curve for Modified pinspacer and yarn

Co efficient of friction of pinspacer is 0.221 and Co efficient of friction of

modified pinspacer is 0.31. The friction value of modified pin spacer is more than that
of pin spacer due to the surface of the rubber is less slippery than the metal pinspacer
and more number of point contact in the rubber cot with the yarn.

3.1 Yarn Imperfections

The results obtained on the effect of modified pinspacer on yarn

imperfections are shown in the table 4.1

that produced in the normal spacer. The yarn imperfections are
reduced in most of the cases in yarn samples produced using
modified pinspacer when compared with that yarn produced with
that yarn produced in pinspacer.

made. When modified pinspacer was used, Um% have been
reduced in all cases and CVm% have been reduced in all but one
cases when compared with that normal spacer. Um% reduced in all
cases and CVm % reduced in most of the cases when compared with
that pin spacer.

CHAPTER 5

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS

5.1 SUMMARY

Modify the design of the existing pinspacer to increase the control over the
floating fibres towards the delivery roller. The effect of modified pinspacer on quality
of yarn was analysed.

5.2 CONCLUSIONS

Yarn samples are produced by normal spacer, pinspacer and modified

pinspacer. Their properties were compared between them. The test results showed
that use of modified pinspacer give good results in the imperfections, count CV%,
CVm% and hairiness. However, no significant changes is observed in single yarn
strength.

5.3 SCOPE FOR THE FUTURE WORK

Future work may be carried out by giving rotational movement to the

modified pinspacer.
Grooved type of pin may be used in pinspacer.
The experiment may be also carried out on various yarn counts.
