COLLEGE PARK, Md. University of Marylands sorority Sigma Delta Tau and fraternity Zeta
Beta Tau hosted a Spring philanthropy event, Backyard BBQ, on April 21. The event raised $750
for Prevent Child Abuse America.

The Backyard BBQ sold hotdogs, hamburgers, chicken, chips and smores.

To increase attendance, the sorority hosted tables outside of McKeldin Library and the Stamp
Student Union. At the tables, they talked about the event and sold pinwheels. People bought
pinwheels for $2, which were later placed in a garden with the individuals name on a pinwheel.

Sigma Delta Tau decided to add this fundraiser to their annual Pinwheels for Prevention event. In
the past, Pinwheels for Prevention consisted of a pinwheel garden in the middle of McKeldin
Mall.
This year Vice President of Philanthropy Rachel
Moskowitz decided to do more.

In the past, the pinwheel garden has raised a lot

of awareness for our cause, however we felt that
we could do more. We wanted to create something
new that would hopefully raise more money in
addition to awareness, said Moskowitz.

To keep the tradition of the pinwheel garden, they decided to plant the garden outside of the
sorority house.

We wanted to keep the integrity of the pinwheel event, putting it in front of our house made
sense as we wanted to draw attention to the Barbecue. Pinwheels are the national symbol for
child abuse prevention and keeping the garden tied together the new event with our tradition of
the sorority, said Moskowitz.

The event was created to raise money and awareness for Prevent Child Abuse America and
Childrens Miracle Network. The Vice President of Financial Affairs, Jessie Goldberg, helped
host the event.

We raised almost $1,000 from the barbecue event

itself, including donations from our co-sponsors.
Although this was our first barbecue, I would say
this event was very successful!

pinwheel sales.

Sigma Delta Tau is proud to have expanded their traditional Spring Pinwheel Garden to include
the barbecue. Now they will be focusing on their annual Your Way Through College Park
event, which will be held toward the end of Fall 2017. This is an all-you-can-eat buffet of various
foods from around College Park hosted at their sorority house to raise money for Prevent Child
Abuse America.
