ACADEMIC ESL COURSE

SCOPE AND SEQUENCE CHART:

Level 1: HIGH BEGINNER/LOW INTERMEDIATE:


This is a comprehensive course for beginners that will include writing, reading, grammar, spoken English and listening. It is a beginner level course for students
who know some English and have an active basic vocabulary. Areas covered will be basic functions in the community and in the workplace, e.g., effective
communication in everyday situations such as post office, school, or services, phone communication, written communication, e.g., messages, citizen complaints,
reports, letters to officials. The curriculum will include related readings, listening and speaking activities, focus on pronunciation and writing and grammar. The
curriculum will be enhanced through additional electives, such as computer skills or career exploration. (for teachers: emphasis is on spoken skills)

The curriculum will follow a theme-based approach and will deliver skills in the context of the following themes:

Level 2: INTERMEDIATE TO ADVANCED LEVEL


This is a course for intermediate to advanced speakers of English who need to improve their oral and written English communication skills for employability or
college readiness. The curriculum will focus on reading for multiple purposes, writing for academic and professional purposes, oral communication skills for
academic and professional purposes. (for teachers: The focus will be on more formalized reading and writing, diverse types/genres of reading, writing, different
genres of speaking and listening activities, use of newspaper, summaries, fiction/non-fiction, reports, group projects, portfolios, demonstrations of skills, critical
and analytical readings, journals, homework, assignments or projects outside school)

The curriculum will follow a theme-based approach and will deliver skills in the context of the following themes:
