LABORATORY REPORT NO.

1
CPU MINI STEAM POWER PLANT

I. INTRODUCTION

Steam power plant is an important system in mechanical engineering for

electric power generation. It is also used as a source of power for ship
propulsion and for driving other machines or systems.

Owing to changes in technology as reflected through the growth of plant

size, the various forms of steam being used, the rapid rise in costs for
equipment and fuel, steam power plant engineering continues to be a
subject of importance.

II. OBJECTIVE

To familiarize with the CPU Mini Steam Power Plant, its parts and
their functions

III. EQUIPMENT
CPU Mini Steam Power Plant

IV. PROCEDURE
1. Sketch the high-pressure piping to the header of the shutoff
valve of each boiler and then to each of the main engines or
turbines. Indicate the location of each valve of fitting and give
the type and purpose of each and the reason for its particular
location. Show steam seperators and steam traps.
2. For the second sketch, indicate the path of the exhaust steam,
condensate and feed-water from each of the main engines back
to the boilers. Observe the general outline given for the previous
sketch, and in addition indicate the following: exhaust pressure
and disposal of steam, location of oil seperator, source of make-
up or raw-water supply and were admitted to system. Show how
it is controlled and measured
3. Give the description of each of the main boiler and engine or
turbine units.
a. Boilers. Maufacturer's name, number, type, heating surface or
horsepower, operating pressure and load on each method of measuring output and
rating; automatic and safety controls.
b. Furnace. Wall construction; kind of fuel used, method of handling and
how prepared, tempered, pulverized, or heated (as in use of oils); provision for
handling ash; type of air supply and its control; burning equipment, type of stoker,
type pulverized-fuel nozzle, type fuel-oil nozzle.
c. Engines and Turbines. Manufacturer's name, number, size, and full
classification of each condensing or noncondensing, kind of load, method of
lubrication, procedure in starting and safety controls.
4. Auxiliaries. A brief description of the type, size, and conditions
of operation of each of the major auxiliaries should be included
in the report.
Condensers: Surface or jet. Size of steam, water, and air connections.
Pressures and temperatures at time of observation. Source of circulating water.
Spray ponds, cooling towers. Condenser pumps: Wet- or dry-air pumps, condensate
pumps, and circulating-water pumps should be described.
Feed-water System.
a. Heaters: open or closed; method of pipping; pressures and
temperatures at time of observation.
b. Pumps: type, size and speed.
c. Control: type and method of operation of feed-water regulators and
pump governors, if any; treatment of feed-water regulators and pump
governors, if any; treatment of feed-water.
Other Auxiliaries. Note the type and location of each of the following, if they are
provided: superheaters, economizers, forced-draft fans, induced-draft fans, soot
blowers, CO2 rcorders, oil purifiers, air compressors.
5. Record all values as given by guide. Determine plant
performance by securing total quantities of inflow to plant in fuel
and water, and output of steam, kilowatts, etc.

Automatic and safety controls: Incorporated in the safety and control
system are operating functions, or sub-systems, which react
automatically to a change in condition outside of the pre-set
range. Failure of most sub-systems produces a visual alarm on the
main control panel and may also produce an audible alarm. In the
majority of cases, failure of a sub-system requires manual resetting of the cut-
out before the sub-system can be restarted. This provides protection for
personnel on the ship and for the boiler installation, as the reason for
a sub-system failure can involve more than that particular sub-
system.
