based organization dedicated to providing reassurance and emotional support for people who have had or
will have some kind of ostomy surgery, such as a colostomy, ileostomy, urostomy (urinary diversion) or a

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Many of you may have heard that our Vice
President, Guy Lupero passed away in May.
We extend our heartfelt sympathy to his wife
Barbara. Guy will be missed - he was a very
enthusiastic supporter of our group who never
failed to volunteer his time to help in whatever
way was needed. Stan Novack has kindly
agreed to fill the Vice Presidency position.
Janice Winters joined the board a while ago
and Joan Gardner has also agreed to serve on
the board. The organization simply cannot
exist without people to run it, so we are very
grateful to Joan, Stan and Janice and look
forward to working with them in the future.
What to Take to Bed with You!

Put your car keys beside your bed at night. If
you hear a noise outside your home or
someone trying to get in your house, just press
the panic button for your car. The alarm will
be set off, and the horn willcontinue to sound
until either you turn it off or the car battery
dies.
Thistip came from a neighborhoodwatch
coordinator. Next time you come home for the
night and you start to put your keys away,
think of this: It's a security alarm system that
you probably already have and requires no
installation. Test it. It willgo off from most
everywhere inside your house and will keep
honking until your battery runs down or until
you reset it with the button on the key fob
chain. It works if you park in your driveway or
garage. Ifyour car alarm goes off when
someone istrying to break into your house,
odds are the burglar/rapist won't stick

around. After a few seconds, all the
neighbors will be looking out their windows to
see who is out there and sure enough the
criminal won't want that. And remember to
carry your keys while walking to your car in a
parking lot. The alarm can work the same way
there. This is something that should really be
shared with everyone. Maybe it could save a
life or a sexual abuse crime.
It would also be useful for any emergency,
such as a heart attack, where you can't reach a
phone. My Mom has suggested to my Dad that
he carry his car keys with him in case he falls
outside and she doesn't hear him. He can
activate the car alarm and then she'll know
there's a problem.

If you were in need of an anti-diarrheal agent,
you would do well to consider Immodium, rather
than Lomotil. Not particularly new, Immodium
has become more and more the drug of choice in
reducing volume of discharge in ileostomies and
colostomies. Its great advantage over Lomotil is
that it contains no atropine and anticholoinergic.
Atropine in large amounts has several side
effects, including difficulty in urinating and
dryness of the mouth, and it can increase
intraocular pressure in persons with closed angle
glaucoma.

up-to-date information. But misunderstanding
still exists, and while some folklore is
harmless, some can be dangerous if it keeps a
person from correctly preventing or treating an
illness. Listed below are some common
misconceptions (fallacies), about digestive
diseases, followed by the facts, as professionals
understand them today. .
Ulcers Spicy food and stress cause stomach
ulcers. True or False?
FALSE. The truth is almost all stomach ulcers
are caused either by infection with a bacterium
called Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) or by use
of pain medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen,
or naproxen, the so-called non-steroidal anti-

volleyball, on the island upon which he was
marooned. He named the ball "Wilson". He
talked through all his problems, plans, and.
experiences with Wilson. Wilson really saved
his sanity. Being able to talk to something,
even if it doesn't talk back, can really be a
release. Lots of people name their cars, and
beg it to start on a cold day, or thank it for
getting them hoine safely during a stonn.

a name would help me get more familiar with

than two syllables and had to flow with the

times to talk to Sally. I scold her when she
makes a mess and I praise her when she holds
a seal tight. Being able to speak to her during
changes makes things easier. I thought sharing
this with individuals with ostomies of all ages
might help. If you can release your feelings,
nothing stays pent up inside you. I even take it
one-step further. At those embarrassing
moments when your stoma needs to release
gas, rather than getting flustered, I tell her to
quiet down. The moment passes and it makes
the people around me a little more
comfortable.

While driving in Pennsylvania, a family caught
up to an Amish carriage. The owner of the
carriage obviously had a sense of humor,
because attached to the back of the carriage
was a hand printed sign... "Energy efficient
vehicle: Runs on oats and grass. Caution: Do
