Oracle BI Dashboards
An Oracle BI dashboard is used to display the results of analyses that are embedded in the
dashboard, and other items, such as links to saved analyses, links to websites, Active-X
objects, HTML text, and links to documents. Dashboards are typically created by users with
administrator permissions. However, dashboards are simple to create via the user-friendly
Oracle BI interface. After dashboards are created, they can be shared by common groups of
users or can be personal (not shared).

satisfy the requests. It also handles requests from a variety of front ends, including Oracle BI
applications as well as third-party tools. Oracle BI Server allows a single information request
to query multiple data sources, providing information access to members of the enterprise
and, in web-based applications, to suppliers, customers, prospects, or any authorized user
with web access.
Oracle BI Server serves as a portal to structured data that resides in one or more data
sources: multiple data marts, the Oracle BI Data Warehouse, an enterprise data warehouse,
an operational data store, transaction system databases, unstructured data (such as data
from Endeca), personal databases, and so on. Transparent to both end users and query tools,
Oracle BI Server functions as the integrating component of a complex decision support
system by acting as a layer of abstraction and unification over the underlying databases. This
offers users a simplified query environment in which they can ask business questions that
span information sources across the enterprise and beyond.

XMLA, spreadsheets, unstructured data sources, and so on. A connection to the data source
is created and then used by Oracle BI Server. The data source connection can be defined to
use native drivers or Open Database Connectivity (ODBC).
SQL is generated by Oracle BI Server against the data sources by using the data source
connection, information from the repository, and database-specific features and parameters.
Thus, Oracle BI Server is not just a SQL generator. It determines the best source and the
optimal way to access data. In some cases, Oracle BI Server performs operations more
efficiently than the physical data sources.

implemented, the sheer scale of the ongoing IT investment itself has emerged as the
dominant concern. Even when the latest technologies, open standards, vendors, and
architectural practices, such as Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), have been employed
pervasively, most enterprises now find themselves with too many platforms, too many
technologies, too many domains of expertise, and too many vendors to coordinate and
manage.
In response, a number of technologies and practices have become staples for large
enterprises, ranging from virtualization and centralized storage to enterprise-wide
standardization of software and hardware. This transformation typically involves adoption of a
more centralized, automated, and elastic infrastructure and regime. Perhaps, most
importantly, these engineered systems must not be monolithic. It must be possible for
enterprises to implement them over time, at a pace determined by real business needs and
investment timelines.

Times Ten for Exalytics
TimesTen is a memory-optimized, full-featured relational database with persistence.
TimesTen delivers real-time performance by changing the assumptions around where data
resides at run time. TimesTen stores all of its data in memory-optimized data structures and
supports query algorithms specifically designed for in-memory processing. Using the familiar
SQL programming language interfaces, TimesTen provides real-time data management that
delivers extremely fast response time and very high throughput for a variety of workloads.

Oracle BI 11g R1: Create Analyses and Dashboards 2 - 18

Based on Oracle TimesTen In-Memory Database, TimesTen has been specifically enhanced
for analytical processing at in-memory speeds. With lightning fast scan speed of up to 100
million rows/second and enhancements, such as support for analytical functions, and up to
10x columnar compression, TimesTen for in-memory analytics delivers faster reports and
dashboards for departmental as well as enterprise-wide consumption. Oracle TimesTen In-
Memory databases are persistent and recoverable. Durability is achieved through a
combination of transaction logging and database checkpointing to disk.

In the Create section, you can access editors for BI objects to create BI content, including
analyses, agents, Key Performance Indicators, and reports. In the Browse/Manage section,
you can search content by using the Catalog page (by clicking the All Content link). Or you
can apply default searches that return BI objects that belong to you by using the My Analysis,
My Agents, and other similar links. In the Get Started section, you can access download links
for BI desktop tools, for example the BI Office Add-In, as well as access technical
documentation and other related content. The Recent and Most Popular sections contain
recently opened objects, and those that are most popular among you and other users of the
system. Each object includes links to open the object, run it, open it in its respective editor, or
to select more options. Selecting more options allows you to select from a drop-down menu
with access to all available tasks for the object, whichdepending on your privileges and
permissionscan include administering the object (for example), or adding it to a Briefing
Book, or scheduling it (in the case of an agent).

working with an analysis in the Analysis Editor or a Dashboard Editor (both of which are
covered later in the course), you can always save your work and easily navigate from the
Global Header to access saved analyses, dashboards, or other content, or to create new
objects.
The Global Header includes the Home link, which is used to navigate to the Home page from
any other part of the user interface. It also includes the Catalog link, which allows you to
navigate to the Catalog page, in which you can navigate and work with objects in the
Presentation Catalog. You are introduced to the Catalog page and its tools in the lesson titled
Working with Oracle Business Intelligence Analyses.

is organized into folders that are either shared or personal.
Objects in the catalog can be accessed from the Home page, the Global Header, and the
Catalog page, which is accessed through the Catalog link in the Global Header. The Catalog
provides a centralized place to navigate and administer catalog objects.
Users of the catalog can be classified into three roles: administrators, content designers, and
content consumers. Depending on their roles and the object permissions and system
privileges assigned to users and roles, different options and objects are made available in the
Catalog page. For example, only users with an administrative role can toggle to the
Administrator view, which displays the catalogs root folder and allows access to multiple
personal user folders.

You can use the tools on the Catalog pages toolbar to search, sort, navigate, and examine
selected folders and catalog objects. In the example in the slide, a folder is selected in the list,
so its name appears in the Tasks pane, where available tasks appropriate to the selected
object appear for selection. Depending on the object selected, other tools are available from
the toolbar, including, for example, printing and export of analyses. Tasks for objects are also
available from the More link beneath each object.
