Directions:

This is a research assignment. Use your textbook, web articles, and NAU library
to conduct research when writing this paper.

Use APA style references and in-text- citations. You need to use at least 3
different resources besides Castronova (2002), and Moore (2015).

Part 1. DISCOVERY LEARNING:

Download and read the following article:

Castronova, J. A. (2002). Discovery learning for the 21st century:

What is it and how does it compare to traditional learning in
effectiveness in the 21st century. Action Research Exchange, 1(1), 1-
12. Retrived from

ep=rep1&type=pdf
After reading this article and conducting additional research, answer
to the following questions.

What is discovery learning?

Based on Bruners theory(constructivist learning theory ), problem-solving strategies are

mainly fed by the experience that learners have in the past and the current knowledge

to find out more what is being taught and the relationship between these two.

Discovery is more about exploring the world, feeding with questions because

students/learners are actively trying to find out new knowledge. Also in discovery
learning students are expected to show how to scrutinize the knowledge, giving the

answers instead.

How does this form of teaching compare to traditional, teacher-centered

instruction?

Traditional learning is a teacher-centered instruction, however, discovery teaching

mode is more about students participation, even also making some (maybe major)

decisions. Traditional education pays attention all students all together versus discovery

focuses on them individual basis. Technology usage is another difference between

traditional and discovery teaching. Learning is active in discovery teaching. The student

is expected to contribute their ideas and create discussion to understand better in

discovery, versus in traditional teaching students are expected to be silence.

What educational theories support the discovery learning model?

There are three main theories that support the discovery learning model which are John

Dewey (1916/1997), Jean Piaget (1954, 1973), and Lev Vygotsky (Rice & Wilson, 1999)

They have three main common features that define learning as an active, process-

based, and collaborative.

What is the most important thing you discovered about discovery learning?

To me, the most important outcome that would make me fell productive and

accomplish is to see students are being self-encouraged and self-motivated, eventually

self-learn. Because as you all may predict, it is difficult to learn for the students. They

only can provide the information and let the students learn by themselves. When they

become self-discovery rather than being taught by a teacher, the learning will be more

effective and students will understand better and deep due to the huge effect of active

involvement.
How can you apply this method to your future classroom?

I used to be a science teacher and discovery teaching/learning one of the most used

methods in all my classrooms. Bruner emphasizes that students learn better when they

create concepts and principals on their own. As an example, I would set the materials

for a science experiment/demo and let them discover the materials on their own and

allow them to manipulate the materials. I could be very simple materials like

balance/empty cups, water & sand weights and a few objects.

Part 2. ADDITIONAL CHAPTERS
Select one of the following chapters to conduct research: Chapter 2,
3, 5 or 12. Review the chapter and respond to related questions for
that chapter by conducting your own research.
Chapter 2- Teaching Diverse Students

1. Teaching all students. Remember that a teachers job is to teach all students

and assume an attitude that all students can learn. Research techniques and

strategies that can be used to accomplish this task. Sources of information

include the library, the Internet, current journals, and recent books.

We can start with explanations of diagrams, make posters, physical models or

graphs, or visual or oral directions, if the students would be comfortable during the

test, allow them to chew gum or snacks. Addition to that working on a small group,

reading aloud, an extended time during assessments, reward system, use of graphic

organizers in writing. Further: Teacher assistance with oral and written directions.

Use of study guides prior to tests from chapter text and classroom notes, break

assignments into sections for better understanding. Tashliks (2010) study found the

following: More and more school systems rely on an excessive series of standardized

exams to determine an ever-widening range of education decisions: promotion and

graduation requirements for students, bonuses for principals, tenure and salaries for

teachers, ratings for schools, and school closings.

2. Intelligence profile. Evaluate your own intelligence profile according to Gardner. In

what frames of mind (intelligence areas) do you come out strongest?

Even though I know what my intelligence are however after reading the question I

wanted to test myself with a small quiz to find out what intelligence profile I fall
into.(link is below) Two of my strongest intelligence are logical-mathematical and bodily-

kinesthetic. However testing myself I realized I am interpersonal as well.
