Dear Dr. Bruce,
As an English major, this course was necessary in order for me to start familiarizing

myself with ethical research and group work. The peer reviews were a first time tool for me, and

has enlightened me to now seek revision from peers in the same course as myself. For the spring

2017 semester, this course has improved my writing and communication skills and inspired me

to continue on my English degree goals. The six student learning outcomes (SLOs) have

disciplined me and guided me through all the assignments assigned through us and has helped

me stay focused. Enclosed is the portfolio that will demonstrate what works have consisted of me

using the SLOs and how they were used to help prepare me for the rest of my college career and

as a writer. I will use the SLOs when applying to grad school and for my future English courses.

Enclosed is my rough draft and revised annotated bibliography since this assignment

meets (SLO1) and (SLO2) which are rhetorical focus and ethical research. Formal writing was

used for a variety of audiences like the professor and students. Research was done and a lot of

sources were cited and used. I choose to discuss an ethical issue which is immigration and built

my working thesis to explain my research. My working thesis was that there is a history

between the United States and Mexico that has been ongoing for years that can explain why the
people from Central America migrate north. There are theories of migration that explain in depth

why immigration is a phenomenon that continues increasing over the years. Statistics prove that

immigrants arent the ones committing the crimes and they dont take anyones job, Hispanic

labor has been a high demand in the U.S since the forties. It also uses (SLO3) and (SLO4) by

using persuasive arguments, organization, and focus. The persuasive argument is that stereotypes

created about undocumented people are wrong. The counterargument is included and the

research to argue against it. It is chronological order and kept at an MLA format. The topics and

headers are in bold and help the writer and reader stayed focused and organized. This assignment

also uses (SLO5) because e it required specific language and tone which was informative and

persuasive. I was able to use language to communicate to all races and diversities as well as

those who stereotyped undocumented people in hopes to enlighten their misunderstanding and

perceptions.

The Discussion Board week 8: Peer Review of Bibliographies demonstrates my

understanding and knowledge of the SLOs in the syllabus as well. (SLO1) was used by

responding formally to another student in a very logical and respectful manner. (SLO4) was

applied in this discussion board when communicating with another peer effectively to address a

rhetorical situation. My thoughts and comments were given clearly, while staying focus that the

peer followed the rubric. In this response I demonstrated (SLO6) which is collaboration. I

communicated objectively and let the student know I didnt feel that they had an ethical issue, so

suggested arguments they can include to make the issue more ethical. Positive feedback was

provided with suggestions. Collaboration was used when I intended to help the student improve

their annotated bibliography. Dont forget to include your counter argument and evidence for it

as well. Maybe you can find one more source that you will use to support the counter argument.
I gave opinions on what can be added to make the bibliography more clear. The assignment lead

me to meet the SLOs required at the beginning of the semester.

Overall, the student learning outcomes will be mile stones used to reach my education

career goals. I will be taking many English courses that require me to do ethical research and all

the SLOs combined. The peer reviews were extremely helpful since I never considered feedback

form another student. It was interesting to see students critique my work and offer helpful

suggestion that helped improve my score. I learned a lot and was able to peer review other

students work. The SLOs will be taught to my future students and colleagues. I can now write in

a more persuasive manner and address issues like who will be my audience and stay focused on

key arguments and topics. I also gain skills and knowledge on different designs according to the

format, which includes writing like if I was publishing in the L.A Times or even Wikipedia.

Best,

Diana June Greer
